L2J Posted March 23, 2005 #26 Share Posted March 23, 2005 But really folks to say something to a smoker as far as "it's bad for your health".. that's plain rude. I always try to be polite when it comes to smoking and would never think of lighting up in a non-smoking area and if I did it would be nice to hear "excuse me...where you aware that this is a non-smoking area" instead of all the snotty remarks. But the thing that really gets me is when someone comes into the casino, sits down at the same table as me and then tells me to put my smoke out or most recently grabbed a lounge next to mine by the aft pool and complained about the smoke. yogimax Posted March 23, 2005 #27 Share Posted March 23, 2005 I agree with the above post. Comparing smoking to murder or rape is ludicrous. If anyone lives in someone else's world it's the smoker. You can't smoke anywhere anymore. Not planes, taxis, trains, public buildings, restaurants, work, schools etc. I respect that it is harmful for someone who doesn't smoke to have breathe second hand smoke and I agree wholeheartedly that the non smoker shouldn't have to put up with that. But the majority of the smoking areas on the ship are outside. I don't allow smoking in my own house and I smoke! But really folks to say something to a smoker as far as "it's bad for your health".. that's plain rude. I don't say things to people who are drinking or gambling their houses away or are grotesquely overweight!!! Donna Donna, I think you have come up with a good compromise for cruise ships - smoking only in designated outdoor areas. A similar issue is non-smoking cabins. My wife is highly allergic to cigarette smoke and if we are unfortunate to follow a chain-smoker, you can imagine the discomfort. I can't imagine why cruise ships can't designate a small portion of cabins to be non-smoking, issued on a first-come, first-served basis
ColoradoJuli Posted March 23, 2005 #28 Share Posted March 23, 2005 On the Conquest class of ships, is there a lounge that is non-smoking? I would love to be able to enjoy the piano bar without any smoke. Also, someone mentioned one side of the ship being smoking. Is this true on the Carnival ships? I was recently on NCL and they did not have one area or the other designate for smokers. They allowed smoking everywhere outside.
glrounds Posted March 23, 2005 #29 Share Posted March 23, 2005 In regard to casinos, it may not be that non-smokers gamble less, but rather gamble less when surrounded by obnoxious smoke! As proven in the gambling revenues of the PARADISE when it was a non-smoking ship, NON-SMOKERS gambled LESS even when NOT SURROUNDED by "obnoxious" smoke. Let's face it. Cruise ships are not for the health fanatics: Cigarette smoke, Diesel smoke, BOOZE, Dirty Casino chips, Noro Virus, Food served around the clock, long periods with no sleep, and those pesky pigeons trying to crap on us all the time. :D

F5Loar Posted March 23, 2005 #31 Share Posted March 23, 2005 Non-smokers gamble less because they are not gamblers by nature. It takes a drinking smoker to do some heavy gambling. What I am saying is by nature a non-smoker is also a non-gambler so they are not going to book a non-smoking ship and hang out at the casino. It's not in their blood to do so. Now put out some heavy horesdorves and free liquor drinks by the slots and those same non-smokers will gladly sit and pull the levers.
Greengirl Posted March 23, 2005 #32 Share Posted March 23, 2005 So you're saying there's a correlation between smoking/drinking/gambling By "nature"? "Nature" dictates my personal choices? Just curious where you get your information.

Whatever it is that is in a smoker's personality or gene pool also causes them to be gamblers and drinkers. Come on, Look at VEGAS! I think it's because they are bold enough to gamble with their life, so gambling with their money is nothing in comparison. I *JUST* returned from Las Vegas & was shocked that they still allow smoking in the airport (designated smoking rooms.....open on top, so the smoke just drifts throughout the airport.....pretty much useless to non-smokers). That was the first time I had been to LV in ten years....I avoid it as much as possible due to the smoke. There, the smoke is horrible. I have no intentions of returning, EVER! Personally, I have a *SEVERE* diagnosed, medically tested allergy to cigarette smoke. I have been unable to gamble in the Elation casino, or even walk by it because the smoke is so horrible. But most of the rest of the ship wasn't too bad. On my most recent cruise, I actually went up to a smoker who was smoking in the non-smoking section and tried to tell her about the situation.....she didn't speak English, so I don't think I ever got through to her though. NOTE: My husband and I have also noticed another personality trait in the smokers we know personally.......all are divorced or have been. Personally, I would LOVE to travel on a non-smoking ship! I beg to differ with her opinion. Her opinions are just that. Opinions. I notice that the person writing the information is a smoker. Surely, her personal bias did not come into play when she wrote her so called, FACTS. ??? These are facts, NOT opinions: I always knew cigarette smoke bothered me as I am extremely sensitive to it. I can smell it if it's anywhere close to me. Unfortunately, I wasn't tested for allergies until I was 37 years old. It wasn't until then that I KNEW, for a fact that I actually had a medical allergy to it. For me, it didn't change a thing......it had always, does always, and apparently, WILL always bother me. I wish it didn't. I can't help it. The above link just goes to show that smokers will do or say anything to justify their addiction.
GoinCruisin Posted March 26, 2005 #38 Share Posted March 26, 2005 Um, what does smoking and being divorced have to do with "personality traits"??? Doesn't make sense... but going with it, are the only divorced people you know smokers? Didn't think so... Being a smoker or non-smoker has no bearing on whether or not you will be divorced. I never said ALL smokers.....I never said EVERY smoker on earth.....I simply said the smokers we know personally. That is, within our circle of acquaintances, neighbors, relatives, etc.....OK? I don't see where "personality trait" comes into play at all. And trying to connect "smoking and divorce" in my opinion, IS insane. What connection? People that smoke get divorced, people that don't smoke get divorced. Trying to imply that smokers out there are more likely to get divorced than non smokers is in my opinion, ridiculous. Sorry, I just don't see it. I know plenty of each, and divorce affects all people... you are not apt to get divorced because you smoke, LOL. Maybe you are just using the wrong term perhaps? I am far from narrow minded... By making the statement you did, you inferred that smoking and divorce have some sort of connection... I am simply saying, that is not true. I am sure that smoking was not the root cause of your friends divorce. BrendaB1 Posted March 26, 2005 #46 Share Posted March 26, 2005 For the most part.....most smokers are considerate of others around them or atleast try to be. Too bad we don't all live in a perfect world....but there will always be smokers, some who drink too much, some who are too boring, some who complain too much, etc. etc. And yes, even divorced people. Variety is the spice of life. It takes all kinds to make up this life as we know it. Otherwise, think about how boring it would be if every little thing was perfect and we all had nothing to disagree about. :D

BlueHerons Posted March 26, 2005 #49 Share Posted March 26, 2005 As a former smoker (19 months!!), I am happily married and have been for quite a while, I don't gamble, and I drink like a fish. The generalizations are silly. Maybe smokers sometimes exhibit addictive personality traits. I know as a former smoker I felt like a social outcast. It is an addiction, nicotine is one of the most addictive drugs known to man.
F5Loar Posted March 26, 2005 #50 Share Posted March 26, 2005 Well come to think of it I just returned from an Irish Pub in Atlantic City on last St.Pat's day and it was packed full of Irish smokers who were drunk. Same goes for a crusie casino which is what we are speaking of here. If you go in there you will notice the majority of the people (not all) that are gambling will have a cig. in one hand, a drink in the other and if you asked them they are either currently divorced or have been in the past. Sorry odds are in our favor on this subject. What I hate is those slotters that have the cig. in one hand , the drink in the other and pull the lever with their foot as the swear cuss words about their ex's out loud when they loose!
