sanmarcosman Posted July 14, 2011 #1 Share Posted July 14, 2011 Guilty plea in cruise ship killing By Greg Moran 12:36 p.m., July 14, 2011 SAN DIEGO — A Los Angeles man who was charged with beating and strangling his wife to death aboard a cruise ship two years ago pleaded guilty Thursday to a murder charge in federal court in San Diego. Robert John McGill faces a maximum term of life in prison at his sentencing on Nov. 8. An FBI agent escorted Robert McGill of Los Angeles from a Carnival cruise ship docked in San Diego after his arrest in July 2009. — Howard Lipin Shirley McGill — California DMV McGill’s wife, Shirley McGill, was found dead in her cabin aboard the Carnival cruise ship Elation exactly two years ago on July 14, 2009. That was Robert McGill’s 55th birthday, and the couple had celebrated the event by going into the port city of Cabo San Lucas, according to court papers. Robert McGill was “extremely intoxicated,” his lawyer wrote in a motion early on in the case. Witnesses aboard the ship described his as stumbling around and barely able to walk. After the woman’s body was discovered by ship personnel, McGill confessed to killing her in writing and verbally to ship security officers and FBI agents, who flew to the ship to investigate the death. The couple married in 2003. They were former high school sweethearts who got back together later in life and rekindled their relationship. Robert McGill worked with at-risk youths for the Los Angeles County Office of Education

billie5 Posted July 14, 2011 #11 Share Posted July 14, 2011 I'm not trying to knock Leothelion (I love the name), but what in the world is "I'm just saying" supposed to mean. Leo is unfortunately not alone in adding this; others sometimes do as well, as if it changes the post. Surely, all of us are just saying what we post, so is there a point to saying we are just saying? Sorry if I am being dense. Bill

A few differences - he plead guilty she said nothing and was found innocent by a jury of her peers..........

Maybe he should have hired Baez. I wonder why his sentencing isnt until November? At least the jury had common sense.

Scottee25 Posted July 15, 2011 #22 Share Posted July 15, 2011 Maybe he should have hired Baez. I wonder why his sentencing isnt until November? At least the jury had common sense. Sentencing is not until November because it is a capital murder case. Both sides need to prepare arguements for what they believe the judge should issue as a sentence and why. He was tried in federal court. It's a murder trial. Since the caption says he faces a maximum of life in prison, I am assuming it was not first degree murder or he could face the death penalty. Still, both sides will argue why he should or shouldn't receive the maximum. They need time to prepare. Hence the reason why the sentencing is not for a couple of months. I really think the jury was sequestered at Disney World every night. That's why they lived in Fantasy Land and found her innocent. This guy, well, at least he did the right thing and plead guilty. :p No special room in Hell for him--just in with the general population.
