Tulsa Cats Posted July 15, 2011 #1 Share Posted July 15, 2011 Hubby and I will be in Rome for two days before mid November cruise. We've been to Rome twice and want to get out of town and see the countryside. Early research shows cooking classes and winery tours etc end in October. I'd love this. Any ideas of someone who'll be available in November? Thanks
SuiteTraveler Posted July 15, 2011 #2 Share Posted July 15, 2011 Hi! We just did the Roman countryside in May. There are some really cool places to go to that most American's are unaware of. We went to Bomarzo - Garden of Monsters, Villa Lante - the finest Rennaissance Garden in existence - in a medieval hill town - you have to see it to believe! And had lunch at an Italian restaurant not frequented by tourists. We finished the day at Villa Farnese which is the building that the Pentagon is based on. The frescoes in there and the building itself are a WOW! The massive spiral staircase is so amazing - I almost cried when I saw it - very few places are this beautiful. I'm going to lay out our itinerary for you because it was so incredible, but if you don't like it, then ask Gilberto what he would recommend instead - he may know of someone who teaches cooking and he could definitely take you wineries. Bormarzo Park of the Monsters: http://www.bomarzo.net/index_en.html It is really fun to be there early in the morning before crowds arrive. When you tour the park, be sure to keep in mind that this was viewed by people living in the 1500's and how astounding this must have been to them. It is set up to amaze the viewer and it does! There is a great book available about Bomarzo on Amazon.com, BTW. Villa Lante Perhaps the most amazing garden - far better than Tivoli Gardens! I must admit to feeling quite jealous of the 50 ft. long table with the fountain running through it overlooking the Roman Countryside. What it must have been like to attend a dinner party there! http://www.gardenvisit.com/garden/villa_lante http://www.bergerfoundation.ch/Jardin/jardin-bagnaia_english.html Villa Farnese: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Villa_Farnese Allow at least 2 - 3 hours to tour this massive structure. The frescoes are unbelievable - each on different and so high quality. http://www.greatbuildings.com/buildings/Villa_Farnese.html Our guide grew up in this area and was very proud to show us around and tell us all about it - he's a very nice man: Gilberto Stanzioni Discovery Tours Limousine service Italy Via della Vaccheria, 21 00069 Trevignano Romano (Roma) Italy Tel: 0+39 06.9985202 Fax: 0+39 06.99826805 Cell: 0+39 339.1592540 Email: info@discoveryguidedtours.com www.discoveryguidedtours.com
