Train from CT to Bayonne?

Has anyone ever taken the train from Connecticut (Metro North or Amtrak) to Bayonne? I know there would be a ton of connections via Penn Station or Newark but is it worth doing instead of driving/parking? If anyone has done it, can you let me know the logistics you took? Much appreciated!

If you take Amtrak from CT to Newark Penn Station, you can take a cab to and from the port for about $50 each way.

If you can manage your luggage, then you can get very close to the port by public transit. From NY Penn Station you would walk (or cab) to the Herald Square Building at 33rd & 6th (handicapped entrance to the subway is in this building). Take PATH to Hoboken ($1.75) and transfer to the Hudson Bergen Light Rail to 34th St. in Bayonne $2.10). From there you have to call a cab to ride into the port - about $10. From Grand Central you can take the subway shuttle to Times Square and transfer to the N, Q, or R train to 33rd St or just take a cab to 33rd & 6th. Another option from Grand Central is to take the #4 or 5 train to Fulton St., walk over to World Trade, take Path one stop to Exchange Place, and transfer to the Hudson Bergen Light Rail to Bayonne.

if you do this, allow PLENTY of time.....several extra hours (or preferably the day ahead..)

There have been several incidents with power and trespassers lately that have been causing delays.......just food for thought!
