Which passport to sail?

I am a dual UK/US citizen and I am going on a MED cruise this year. I want to travel to the port with my UK passport but use my American passport to cruise. Has anyone ever done this? Do you think it would cause issues on the immigration side?

It's not uncommon for people to hold two passports and you shouldn't run into problems providing that you depart and enter the country you presently live in using the same passport. You can't leave the UK, for example, using your UK passport and then re-enter using your US passport. Red flags all around if you attempt that.

 

As to using the American passport during the cruise, make sure when you fill in your cruise documents that you enter that passport, not the other. You may want to read this thread: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1426127

I am also a dual US\EU (Irish Republic). The only time I use my US passport is to re-enter the US, as above just make sure the numbers match on your travel documents

Might you not run into a problem if the cruise leaves and re-enters the Schengen area, as the US passport you are cruising on has no original date of Schengen entry stamp (because you did that on the UK one)?

Just curious... why one passport over the other for cruise/port?

For European cruises, we leave and reenter the US using American Passports, as you must, and enter Europe and cruise using UK passports. Sometimes confuses US immigration when we come home.

I'm a dual UK/NZ citizen, living in New Zealand.

 

I use my UK passport to enter and leave the UK, and for any trips within Europe, and I use the NZ passport for most other places in the world.

 

I've just done a Med cruise on Voyager, out of Venice. I used my UK passport for that.

 

If you're flying to/from Europe for your Med cruise, it would probably be better to use your UK passport.

 

Whichever passport you decide to use for the Med cruise is your choice, but do be sure to present the same passport on check-in as you have listed with the cruise line at on-line check-in.
