Packing Light

Looks like a good list, but I think you will find you will cut it back for your next cruise. I liked your choices for "on plane" wear- safety minded, comfy and stylish.

Perhaps the second worse phrase for packers, right after "just in case", is "it doesn't take up that much room."

Consider re-purposing/ downsizing/ eliminating the items I'm putting in purple.

. I usually pack one set of DH's in my bag and one of mine in his as much for space distribution as well as loss prevention.

While you are on the trip keep one copy of your packing list in the closet and check off each time you use something. Anything that doesn't have at least 3 checkmarks you will probably want to leave home the next trip.

I have no qualms about tossing things I brought and replacing them with new or souvenirs. That is all part of the joy of travel to me. BON VOYAGE!! Dee

BS just asked me who's going to massage him then. ;-)

I'm still working on paring it down - I've been given some good suggestions on power (I'll probably just take a small squid instead of 2 things). The wipes can probably be pared down to just the baby wipes and clorox wipes. If I can find individually packaged ones, I'll just have a few of each.

BS will have 2 pairs of trunks. Whether I take 2 or 3 swimsuits depends on how much space we end up with. I don't need to worry about room for souvenirs, as the plan is to check a bag on the way back with Tortuga rum padded by dirty clothes. :-D

Strangely enough, none of the meds have duplicate purposes for me. Sudafed is for acute sinus issues, allergy meds are what I take everyday. Tylenol is for fevers, Aleve is for migraines and muscles, as it doesn't work well on fevers for us. Some may call it overkill, but they are very small things that give me peace of mind, so they're worth it for me. It's the same kit that lives in my car for long trips.

My current undies do not dry quickly where it's humid. If I splurge before we go, I'll cut down on that number. I'll post my updated list here in a moment.

Pyjamas! Those are useful.

Anyone know of a 3-1-1 kit that doesn't leak, or should I just order Nalgene travel bottles and double bag in freezer quart baggies?

Always rely on "container store" leakproof bottles. Have had various sizes for 10 yrs plus and never a leak. They even have small spray type ones now to put detangler, hairspray in now. Even bought two square 3 oz. to take water on board plane for the just in case I forgot bottle water after security.

I like the square ones with wider mouths, they also make great flat pill containers. A 3 oz bottle is huge in terms of how much creme/shampoo one needs.

The bottles are made I believe by Nalgene and have also a kit on Amazon. Container Store link: http://www.containerstore.com/shop?showDS=true&Nmpt=&Ntt=leakproof+travel

Gf and I are thinking about doing a cruise with light packing...and skip the dining room on formal nights. Packing is the worst part of cruising.

With airline bag fees now I have noted many dress for formal dinner still, although last cruise I looked around and a lot of dress pant and dress shirt-many no ties, and some business casual-dress pant/polo, and nice dress for female, by second formal night many women were wearing "cruise" purchased dresses. So don't fret and just dress business casual and should suffice. I found as a female nice white or khaki pant and polo with a cardigan backup or long sleeve shirt worked and I didn't freeze.

The hardest part of dressing up is the shoe issue. Last time I brought a nice dress that is crinkle texture so packed in a ziploc--well they weren't perfect but still wore my standard sandals--who looks at feet? Besides our casual ship photos are better than our formals anyhow.

I picked those up when I was in Austin. :-)

I issued a challenge, and now I have to abide by it.

Packing in a bag with these dimensions:

14" x 21" x 10"2,940 cu. in.7.10 lb (3.23 kg)

plus a "personal item" that meets American's rules for a week-long Caribbean cruise in December. We want to go completely carry-on on the way there.

Any tips?

I don't blowdry or curl my hair, I only wear 4-5 pairs of shoes in my regular life, and don't do high heels

I'm figuring I'll pack:

1 formal-ish dress

2 knee-length skirts

2 swimsuits (I had a malfunction last year, I'm bringing 2 ;))

1 swimsuit coverup

2 tank tops

1 lightweight long-sleeve sunshirt

1 pair sunpants (convert to shorts)

Half a weeks' worth of underthings (can wash in sink using my shampoo, or send to be laundered)

1 pair either Mary Janes or sandals - no heels, both very small for a size 11

1 pair water shoes - cave tubing

1 folding duffel bag to check on the way back

What am I forgetting for clothes? Any suggestions for keeping toiletries/cords to a minimum?

I use quick dry clothing for day time. Its light, takes up less space than cotton and will sry over night in your bathroom if you roll it it a towel after waship. I also have a silk top and skirt for dressy nights. Again they are very light and take up very little space in my luggage. So my real problem, like your is shoes. Normally I would say take flip flops instead of water shoes, but water shoes are better for cave tubing. However, to save space, I would suggest the inexpensive ones from Walmart rather than the more sturdy ones from some place like Lands End.

What about sun lotion? You can get the lotion in a 2.5 oz tube for your liquids bag if you won't have the chance to buy it before boarding ship.

My Vibrams are my water shoes. I wear them everywhere. The flip flops are strictly for on board and at the beach. My skirts are quick-dry, one of my tank tops is, and if I'm really splurging, I might buy quick-dry undies before we go. :D

I took 4 cans of sunscreen last time and ran out. I might be down to 3 this time (I have a tan and enough Vitamin D in my system - yay for not frying in 5 minutes ). We should have a chance to buy it before getting on the ship, and if not, we'll just spend the $12/can on board instead of the $8/can in the store.

We eat in the dining room every night and even on formal nights my husband does not wear a jacket. He does wear dress pants and a high end shirt with a tie. Jackets take up a lot of room.

I take a long black skirt and jacket, a few different color shells, scarves and different jewelry.

I learned my lesson with white, no white, I spilled red wine on it one evening.

Black slacks a few gauzy tops.

Same black shoes for every night in the dining room.

I did a transatlantic a few years ago (14 nights) and a week in Italy to follow. I did it all in a 25 inch suitcase, it worked out well. I did do underwear and t's in the laundry on sea days though. Now I am platinium!

No flight for us though, we drive to the ports in Fl.

Twibbs, I am envious of you and you are now my Packing Idol. I am on the same cruise as you so if you need something, find me and I'm sure I have it. (LOL)

I agree...comfort first! But that is really funny--maybe black hose to make it formal!

Since you brought them up--are they comfortable for walking long distance,on beach or in waves? DH looking at pair for the beach as in past watersocks, watershoes etc all have sand getting in..your experience and feedback is appreciated. (also info on brand experience)

Once they're wet, I don't like to walk around in them all day on concrete. I haven't been somewhere with lots of sand to test them out (well, I live in west Texas...does that count?)

Pretty much, if you like walking barefoot, you'll love them. If you don't, it's hit or miss.

Oh, and I can't remember the last time I wore pantyhose. So not happening. :p

Thanks fo reply. Based on TExas drought--it may look like sand by now.

We used to live in McAllen/South Padre but that was before they invented these shoes.

I've sailed with a carryon only--When flying they will not usually say anything about a reasonable backpack for by your feet when flying, or a large tote like the catch-all Vera Bradley tote in addition to your suitcase. If you are worried about having to store carry-on bag by feet and due to lack of room in plane overhead bins, just gate check it for free.
