HONG KONG where to stay with wheelchair user

We are staying in Hong Kong for 3 nights in November on our way to a New Zealand cruise.

One of our party sometimes needs to use a wheelchair. Any hotel (as long as rooms aren't too small) will be adequate for their needs.

However we would like a hotel in an area where, if they are having a bad day, they can just go out straight into a nice area with things to see, and have a walk for an hour or so. We realise that the sights in Hong Kong are spread out somewhat and there isn't an ideal location as such to see them all.

This is why we need somewhere where if all they manage to do that day is wander an hour from the hotel, they will have had a pleasant walk and got a small "taste" of Hong Kong.

We have looked on the internet but it isn't always easy to tell what is just outside the hotel. And some hotels that are rated highly for location are done so because of their proximity to public transport. We need a hotel that is close to public transport but that is also pleasant to walk around.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Despite the iconic photos, most of built-up HK within mebbe 1/4 mile of the waterfront, on both side of the harbour, is level ground.

And the hotels are nearly all modern & wheelchair-friendly.

On the mainland (Tsim Sha Tsui). Anywhere along Salisbury Road from the cruise terminal & the terminal for the cross-harbour Star Ferry, to the bottom of Nathan Road. Or at that end of Nathan Road itself, or the streets just off. The whole area is busy & the harbourfront "avenue of the stars" is close by.

At the ferry terminal end more for easy transport, at the Nathan Road end more for shopping.

Hotel in the cruise terminal ?Marco Polo? gets good reviews, as does my favourite & probably best value in HK, the Salisbury Hotel (operated by the YMCA, though you wouldn't know it), next door to the Peninsula (if you've got serious money) & a Hilton.

Beyond Nathan Road, Kowloon Shangri-la has super harbourview rooms (entire front "wall" of the harbourview rooms is glass)

On the island, beware that close to the harbour around Central & Admiralty & even Wan Chai, there's a lot of pretty soul-less big buildings & long elevated walkways. Like near both the Central & Wan Chai ferry terminals, the Expo area & Harbour Road, Certainly the island's not all like that, but do watch for it cos I get the impression thats exactly what you're not looking for.

Queen's Road / Queensway is mainly bustling, esp around Wan Chai.

North Point & Western Market are both a bit out-on-limbs but have a bit of local colour.

Your friend will be fine with the ferries & the MTR, and would appreciate the mid-levels travelator system on the island to get a modestly elevated view.

But best avoid the island's rickety & usually-packed trams.

Fascinating place, one of my favourites.

Have a great time

John Bull :)

Thanks that's extremely helpful.

John - this is exactly the type of information we were looking for and following your reply a quick look on google street view confirmed this is the place to be for us.

We just didn't know where to start looking before!

Just deciding between the Sheraton, Marco Polo Hong Kong Hotel and Langham now!

Thanks again.

WE stayed at the Langham in Feb. Truly a very fine hotel 5 stars.

Langham is in Mongkok, a very busy area. If you don't mind being in the crowd it is a great hotel. TST may be a less hectic area. Salisbury YWCA is wonderful for the price and the location. I agree with John Bull, any hotel in the area near Star Ferry would give you access to nice walks, shopping, or a great view of the harbor.
