A lot of upcharges on the Epic??

The ship has us interested but we have gone on 9+ cruises on RCCL, Carnival, Holland, and Premier (when they were around) and we are unsure if we would like it. We wanted to try NCL but we don't like a lot of up charges for food, or shows. We do understand having a very fancy restaurant with an up charge and all the rest as the main dining room or the buffets. We are in our 40's so we are not into the discos or gambling a lot. Please let us know what you think! Thanks!

As others have pointed out on similar questions: You can easily cruise NCL without paying anything extra on board. It's totally up to you if you want to pay for the specialty restaurants or any of the other things that might be considered "upcharges."

As far as I know NCL never charges for any of their shows, including Blue Man Group on the Epic.

The only upcharges were for the Cirque Dinner, the Mystery Lunch, the Svedka Ice Bar and the "fancy" restaurants. All the other shows are free and they were just great! The Epic is a very fun and active ship. Lots of dancing, great food in the MDRs and buffet, all aound our favorite! And we were 49 and 51 years young...

The EPIC has no more up charges than any other ship. We cruised on the EPIC in April, I don't gamble and don't do the discos and we had a great time. There are lots of quiet places to get away to. The thing to remember is that every ship is different. We have only cruised on NCL but are now looking at a cruise on Celebrity and one on Princess not because we have anything against NCL but want to try something different. As they say if you always do what you have always done you will always get what you have always got. Same can be said for cruising if you only experience one cruise line then you will never know what you are missing if you try something new.

There is a charge for Cirque I believe, but that show also includes dinner.

There are always opportunities to add a la carte choices to your cruise to customize to fit your needs on all cruise lines and NCL is no different (well, there are more opportunities and choices but all of the basics are covered).

Hi Neighbor,

We are also from Deltona. Also, we have sailed some of the old favorites that you have gone on (Dolpin IV and Seabreeze). Gotta say, I loved Premier when they were around, but I can understand why they didn't last. They gave away the store on all 3 cruises I went on with them (we each have 3 bathrobes from our cruises, that we still use around the pool).

To answer your question, we sailed on the NCL Pearl last November and didn't find the upcharges to be that much. We didn't spend anything on specialty restaurants and were able to find activities to interest us for the entire week. If you want to chat about our cruise experiences, off of the boards, just send me an e-mail at beverlypoitrast at yahoo dot com.

The only "up charge" I paid was to see Cirque Dreams..

You've got two free main restaurants, the buffet and one night I even had a waitered meal at O'Sheehans. (The apple pie is great).

Plenty of free ents. I didn't spend a penny in the Casino or onboard shops. Yet still saw: Blue Man Group, Legends in Concert, The Stephen Sorrentino show, The marionettes, howl at the moon, Beatles tribute, 60s tribute, The Slim Allen band, attended To a Party, White Hot Party and the Crew event in Bliss.. Watched the interview with the Blue Man Group in the Atrium, watched the CD show thing on the TV. Watched the Grand Prix on the big screen in H2O...

All that and didn't spend any extra..

So it can be done....

You are correct; I considered the Cirque to be a specialty restaurant. It actually wasn't either a specialty restaurant or a show - the food and show were both mediocre.

My point remains: You can do a cruise on the Epic without paying for anything extra if you choose.

We like to spend Our extra dollars at the ports of call on none chain restaurants. Now those are truly unique eateries. One that comes to mind is the Mongoose at St. Johns and hopefully it is still there for we will be visiting in December.

I'll be on the Epic in December and it will be my first NCL cruise.

I read that the Cirque is a separately payable show/dinner. What about the other restaurants on the Epic (if you are familiar with them)? Which ones would not be included in the cruise price?

Thanks.
