PattiMerritt Posted March 28, 2005 #1 Share Posted March 28, 2005 Anyone know whatever happened to the Freeport? She sailed out of Miami as a passenger/cargo ship to Freeport & Nassau.
dougnewmanatsea Posted March 29, 2005 #2 Share Posted March 29, 2005 Well, she wasn't an SS, but rather an MS, as she is a motorship, not steam. Anyhow, this old girl is still alive and kicking. She's now called DISCOVERY SUN and runs on day cruises out of Ft. Lauderdale. Another time when I am not completely spent (see post 12 on this thread) I will perhaps recount some more information on this ship. In the meantime, take a look at this article from the defunct web site Ferry Voyager (the article has been saved thanks to The Internet Archive) by a friend of mine, Scandinavian shipping historian and author Bruce Peter which I am sure you will enjoy. It also includes an account of the ship by the late ship enthusiast and author Denny Bond Beattie, and photos of the ship then and now.
PattiMerritt Posted March 31, 2005 Author #3 Share Posted March 31, 2005 Doug.... Thanks so much for the info. My better half spent several summers on her due to the fact that his step father used to be the captain... you made his day with the article!
