Tendering process..how does it work

No problem for those in suite. The concierge will tell you where to meet and the time and escort you past the lines and you'll be off immediately. Depending on the concierge and the number involved and the port etc., it is likely your friends will NOT be able to go with you. They should be first in line in the morning to pick up tickets at Reception because the line can number in the hundreds!!!! Depending on the port, the number of boats tendering, etc. etc. it can take hours to empty the ship.....so you could have trouble meeting up with your friends. You might want to talk to the Concierge on the first morning after embarkation [embarkation day is an awful busy day for him/her] and inquire. If you only want to do it at one port and ask in advance and it's only 2 or 3 others, you MIGHT be told they can go with you.

Do you still have to line up for tender tickets if you are doing an excursion through the cruise line?

if your meeting place is on the ship then NO, but if your meeting place is on the pier then YES and be one of the first in line to get your tickets--they will announce when and where you can get those.

Normally, your Concierge or Butler will deliver your VIP tender passes the night before, but that is not always the case.

We've had to ask on two occasions.

On our cruise on the Star in March, there were 9 of us, but only two in a suite. I politely asked the concierge about it, and without hesitation, she provided us with 9 tickets. Keep in mind that there are no "special' tenders for VIP's, they just allow you to crowd into the front of the line.

Unless we have a pressing need to disembark early (excursion?), we just fall into line with everyone else.

Go eat breakfast at Cagney's first, relax, and after the first hour or so, the lines are not horrible.
