I know it is cheaper to do it by your self and not on board has anyone had real trouble on getting back when doing it them self?

I did it with p and o last time and did not feel it was long enough time up there :(

On one occasion we got a quote for the taxi ride and I paid the driver when we got there. When we were ready to leave a couple of hours later he was still waiting but wanted double the price to take us back to the ship.

Advice - get a quote for the trip both ways (it should be around AUD$50 - $60 for the cab full) and don't pay until you are dropped back in town or the ship (whichever you want).

I agree with you that the shore tours don't really spend enough time there. Have a great trip. :)

Negotiate a day rate...I have always found the drivers reliable and ready and waiting when we return. Be prepared for a real bun fight at the wharf so bad my grand daughters got scared. My preference for Vila is to spend the day over on Erakor Island on 15 mins from town by cab..small charge which is refunded by you getting use of the water craft, massages food and drink...great place to spend a day.
