You don't need the car in downtown Halifax. So you should use it to travel outside the city and perhaps to go up Citadel Hill and then return it.

Renting a car is much less expensive that the ship's tours, especially if you have three or four people.

You would have time to see a few other places besides Peggy's Cove, according to your interests.

Some people go as far as Lunenburg, taking the slow road there and the faster road back:

Some people just go as far as Mahone Bay.

You could also explore this section of the coast which has some lovely coves and fishing villages and not so many tourists:

However, if you have not been to Halifax before you may want to leave time to explore there too. It is up to you.

You should spend some time right next to your ship on the Harbourwalk. It is a boardwalk that extends about 3 km from the cruise dock to the Casino Nova Scotia and includes 2 museums, a farmers market, shops, restaurants and plenty of boats of course. It may not be as lively in the fall as in the summer, especially if the weather is cool but is still worth a couple of hours of your time. Check out some reviews. http://www.yelp.ca/biz/harbourwalk-halifax

For quick eats along the way try the Battered Fish or Beavertails. For a longer sitdown meal try Stayners Pub or the Lower Deck, the latter being part of the area of restored buildings from the 18th century called Historic Properties.

We were in Halifax two weeks ago on Caribbean Princess. We rented a a car from Avis in Halifax. We took a cab from the cruise terminal to Avis. I had my Garmin with me and just plugged in Peggy's Cove. It was a very easy ride on the scenic route. However, when we got to Peggy's Cove there was chaos as there were 5 cruise ships in port that day and there were so many busses at Peggy's Cove it was like ants on an anthill. We were lucky we had our own car so we didn't even get out. We drove south along the scenic "Lighthouse Route" along the coast and went to Lunenberg. Had a nice lunch and got to see the Bluenose Schooner restoration and Fisherman's Museum. Had a great day away from the crowds.

You can take, I think it's Route #3 , that's the scenic route, down to Lunenberg. Mahone Bay is another georgrous town on the way. It's about a little less than 2 hrs from Peggy's Cove to Lunenberg on the scenic route. You can take the highway back, Route 103. It's only about an hour and 45 minutes back to Halifax on the highway.

We rented from National at the Via station across the parking lot from the pier. We drove the fast route to Lunenburg, then the slow route back to Mahone Bay and Peggy's Cove. Peggy's Cove was empty by the time we got there since the buses were long gone. Lunenburg was a wonderful town with lots of little shops and historic houses to see, and the Bluenose re-build was really interesting. We were out all day and did not have any time to really see Halifax.

Maryann's maps were excellant.

That is a great point and what I should have done. Go to Lunenberg first and take the scenic route back so Peggy's Cove will be less crowded. We did not have any time in Halifax also but, our day was great. I would like to go back there some time for a few days. There is a live cam online where you can watch the Bluenose restoration.
