South America cruise weather

We are sailing a back to back from Florida to South America; around the

horn and disembarking in Buenos Aires in Dec 2011. What kind of weather should we expect in this region? I heard sailing the horn can be calm or very rough.

The odds are when you sail around the Horn that it will be rough as this is where the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean meet. You maybe fortunate and you will not have rough seas but prepare for them being rough.

 

Temperatures will range on your cruise. Buenos Aires will be warm with highs in the high 80's and possibly in the low 90's. When you sail the southern part of South America it will be chilly and because it will be windy the wind chill factor will make it seem even cooler. Lows might be in the 40's in the southern part of the Continent.

 

So, this is the type of cruise where you need clothing for the cold such as a fleece, jacket, sweater or sweatshirt, gloves and a hat and you need clothing for the warm weather.

 

You will see beautiful scenery. We've sailed around South America multiple times and love this itinerary.

I would plan for it to be rough seas. We were lucky and it was extremely smooth - but cold going around Cape Horn. Bring clothing you can easily layer if you need to. But it will be warm in the northern areas, such as Buenos Aires, so be sure to bring some shorts and light clothing too. Have a wonderful cruise!

On one cruise, when we rounded the Horn, there was snow on the deck. Bring layers, and a jacket. Drakes Passage is considered one of the roughest seas in the world.
