What would you recommend as a restaurant in Halifax to celebrate a special occasion? Thanks

DW and I agree, the Five Fishermen, It has been our favourite for many years. Hope you are there in the evening though, it doesn't open until late afternoon. http://www.fivefishermen.com/

Yes, upstairs is the full restaurant. We always ask for the bar area because we like the nautical feel and the great stained glass windows. It has been a few years since we were last there but we have not eaten anywhere else that we prefer more.

We will have a 3 month old baby with us. Is there any area that would suit us best? So many people have recommended this restaurant. How's the halibut? Salmon?

I can't really comment on the fish. We are shell fish people so it is lobster, scallops, crab and mussels when we get there. Having said that, their food is always top notch and my favourite fish is Halibut. I'm sure both are great. As for the baby, I can't think of any one area better than any other. I would still go for the bar area. As I recall they might have a couple of areas that are more intimate, you will have to ask. The front room where the bar is, is large enough that the baby will be fine. Get a seat right by the stained glass windows and enjoy. There are some nice pictures on Google of the bar area of the restaurant.

I think that Chives on Barrington Street is a great spot. They use local ingredients, seafood, meat, veg. I would also try Fid! on Dresdon Row another solid choice. I live in Halifax and I would be very happyto go to either of those places in a heartbeat.

I hope you have a good time here in town and a great meal out.

Thank you for the suggestions. I will mark them down. We will have a few nights in Halifax, so we could try different restaurants. But we don't like to have a heavy meal every evening.

Just saw this, so thought I would reply. We spent quite a bit of time in Halifax. Loved it. Loved the people. The friendliest and most polite people imaginable!

Now, to remember the restaurants. We had lots of seafood and delicious food. We had dinner at the 5 Fishermen. We ate downstairs. It is less expensive and we actually prefered the menu. We ate at a wonderful Italian restaurant. I think it was called A mano. Owned by the same people, was the Bicycle

Thief (I think that was the name). Both had delicious food.

Our first stay, we were at the Courtyard Marriott and enjoyed the nearby Red Stag. There is a musician Friday nights. DH had fish & chips and I had a delicious chicken salad.

For Sushi, we enjoyed (I forget the name. It is opposite the Bicycle Thief). The sushi is so fresh & delicious.

We also spent several nights at the Westin and tried their new restaurant one night and it was surprisingly good.

The very best lobster salad sandwich (and we tried many!) was at the Salt Shaker Deli in Lunenburg. The best I have ever had.

Hope this helps!

I would highly recommend salty's as well. A little more expensive than Five Fisherman.. but the view is worth it.. book in advance and ask to be seated upstairs by the window.. Fabulous view of Halifax Harbour, also would recommend Bicycle Thief or Amano. I think a tourist in Halifax should eat where they can see the harbour and all three of these do that.

In terms of restaurants without a view I would support the Chives, Press Gang or Fid recommendations but add Fiasco (my favourite). If you're ok going more high-end Da Mauritzio is my favourite.

Hi, I live in Halifax and thought I would give you some information on restaurants:

1. Five Fisherman is very good. There is alot of history with this restuarant. It is deemed to be haunted and was originally the morgue for those that died on the Titanic. Very good restaurant for Seafood.

2. The Cut (upstairs)/The Grill (downstairs) - There are two restaurants. One is a "cheaper" version, but not "cheap" by any means. This restaurant is known for its steak. The steak at the grill is amazing. This is located at the Courtyard Marriott.

3. Mongolie Grill - Stir Fry restaurant. They have an entire station that you will fill up your bowl they provide you with which you can choose from a large variety of meats, noodles and vegetables for a stirfry. Once you put everything you want in it, they weigh the bowl and you pay per weight. They than fry up the stir fry on a giant grill and serve it to you. Rice is provided on the tables and various sauces to choose from.

4. I have never tried the Bicycle Thief. It has a very good reputation. I do have a friend there that makes the desserts and I have tried her baking before and it is amazing.

5. McKelvie's - another great restaurant for Seafood.

6. Baton Rouge - This is closer to the Casino Nova Scotia. It is across the street from the hotel that has a pedway that leads to the Casino Nova Scotia. This has a variety of food of great quality. Great Service as well.

Other good restaurants include: Niche and Fireside for smaller more intimate restaurants. All these restaurants are located downtown and close to the waterfront.

I believe you can google all restaurants and see their menu and prices online. I hope that helps.

Food is so subjective! Check out the reviews on Trip Advisor to get a bit more consensus.

We love eating out and here are some of my opinions!

For fine dining I would go to Da Maurizio, the Press Gang and Fiasco. Chives is slightly downscale from this, but very good.

McKelvie's is good for fish. Salty's is good for the view. I find the food very ordinary. The fact that they regularly have two for one coupons in the paper for several years tells you a lot about their prices.

We had a bad experience at Five Fishermen many years ago and have not been back. However, we rarely eat fish when we go out as it is so easy to cook ourselves., so we have not been interested in trying again.

Ristorante a Mano when we went a few years ago for pizza was pricey and not out of the ordinary.

The Wooden Monkey is interesting and we have gone many times for lunch. They are known for local sourcing, organic food and wine and some good vegetarian choices. The Brooklyn Warehouse is also excellent but it is not right downtown.

On our list to try soon are the Bicycle Thief and Cut.

Your ship company is wise to be heading north ahead of the storm. We will get wind and rain, but probably nothing serious.

here is a map showing the walk to the Five Fishermen: https://maps.google.ca/maps?saddr=Canadian+Museum+of+Immigration+at+Pier+21,+1055+Marginal+Road,+NS&daddr=Five+Fisherman+Restaurant+%26+Grill,+1740+Argyle+Street,+Halifax,+Nova+Scotia&hl=en&sll=44.638266,-63.565294&sspn=0.030964,0.084543&geocode=FTogqQIdEhI2_CFVp72x1xDZPykRcw6ozCNaSzFVp72x1xDZPw%3BFbBFqQIdFes1_CEm6Bge6jJphynJJiAUzSNaSzEm6Bge6jJphw&oq=fiv&dirflg=w&mra=ltm&t=m&z=15

I have now been to Cut. It is for not for me at all. Having slabs of raw beef rolled out in a cart to show you the different cuts is not my idea of fine dining.

The Bicycle Thief is busy and competent, but not where I would go for a special evening. It was very noisy.

We went to the Press Gang this summer for our anniversary and it was one of the best meals ever.

My favorites remain the Press Gang, Fiasco and Da Maurizio.

I agree with Maryann re Press Gang and Da Maurizio, Fiasco I have not been but will try soon. I also like Fid have always had fabulous meals there. It is more casual than the two above which I would say are the best in Halifax and perfect for a special occasion.

Mc Kelvies, Five Fishermen, Henry House and Salty's are okay in descending order from my experience. Elements got some very good reviews this summer it is in the Westin Hotel but I have not been there to comment.

Wherever you decide to go hope you have a great evening and very enjoyable meal.
