In Toronto Posted October 4, 2011 #1 Share Posted October 4, 2011 It looks like there are only connecting cabins available in the balcony cabins on the Star for the date that we are interested in. Has anyone sailed on the Star with a connecting room. In some hotel rooms, you can definitely hear much better and smell if the occupant of the other room is smoking. Any info? Thanks, Ellen
Pokeraddict Posted October 4, 2011 #2 Share Posted October 4, 2011 We were on the Sun in 2008 19 day cruise South America and had trouble with a connecting cabin and smoke. We put a towel at bottom of door but didn't help so I ended up duck taping the entire door all the way around including a pc. of tape at the bottom to the carpet. Could also hear conversation on the other side at times but fortunately they went to bed early. Never again would we book a connecting cabin, I don't know if it has to do with Sun being older ship but just won't take a chance.
russianmom Posted October 5, 2011 #3 Share Posted October 5, 2011 We had a connecting cabin a few cruises ago. I don't think they were smoking b/c I am very sensitive to that and did not smell anything. They talked so loud and played the TV so loud. Very distracting and annoying.... che5904 Posted October 5, 2011 #4 Share Posted October 5, 2011 If you are cruising after January the smoke wouldn't be an issue with the new smoking rules. As for noise level, we really didn't notice a difference. We had very noisy kids in the next room that appeared to be using the wall as a bouncing bumper. Not having a connecting door would not have helped. Otherwise we never heard them unless both balcony doors were open. And they were quite noisy, so if the door would have been an issue we would have known
In Toronto Posted October 5, 2011 Author #5 Share Posted October 5, 2011 I didn't know that there was to be a change. When do the new smoking rules take effect? We are looking at mid January. Ellen

In Toronto Posted October 5, 2011 Author #7 Share Posted October 5, 2011 Thank you. I think that I will contact NCL and find out because it really does make a difference to me. Will post what they say. Ellen
Pokeraddict Posted October 5, 2011 #8 Share Posted October 5, 2011 Che is right I forgot about the new policy taking effect in Jan. Here is a link to NCL's announcement http://www.ncl.com/nclweb/pressroom/pressRelease.html?storyCode=PR_080911b I still wouldn't book and adjoining cabin just for the risk of noise. sdmike Posted October 5, 2011 #9 Share Posted October 5, 2011 I hate adjoining rooms unless I get them on purpose. I've been in hundreds of hotel rooms and I can count on 1 hand the number of times a connecting room has not been noisier. I've not been on this ship so take my comments for what they are worth, but I would avoid this if possible
Ms belp Posted October 5, 2011 #10 Share Posted October 5, 2011 Smoking, noise next door, above, or below. Why don't some people just stay home? Cabins too small, don't like the beds, don't like the pillows, window is dirty, don't like the ports; why don't some people just stay home? Drinks too weak, don't have the kind of booze I like; why don't some people just stay home? They don't have washers & dryers; the stewards didn't say hello; why don't some folks just stay home?

cruiser1955a Posted October 5, 2011 #12 Share Posted October 5, 2011 Had a connecting room on the Spirit. Didn't notice any noise. The walls are pretty thin. If you have noisy neighbors, the connecting door won't make it any worse.

Kaye from Chicagoland Posted October 5, 2011 #14 Share Posted October 5, 2011 I thought I was going to like NCL from all the positive reports I've heard. I'm a former Princess cruiser and was looking forward to a new adventure on NCL. Are we nitpicking - just like Princess? Get over it!
rajones007 Posted October 5, 2011 #15 Share Posted October 5, 2011 We booked a 2-bedroom family suite on the Star in Nov 2011 and we don't have a choice. All of them have a connecting mini-suite cabin next door. I was mildly concerned about it before we settled on that cabin because of past experiences in hotel rooms. One night we had a connecting room with Mr. and Mrs. Domestic Abuse, who later that evening were joined by Mr. and Mrs. Porn Star. Yeah, that was quite the night. However. The noise I can deal with. Our bedrooms are on the other side of the cabin so I don't think it'll ever be an issue. It's the smoke that has me worried. That, once again, has been an occasional issue in hotel rooms with connecting doors. I'm a recent quitter and temptation is something I do not need. I will not hesitate to ask for the butlers/stewards assistance in sealing off that door if smoke in the cabin becomes an issue.
In Toronto Posted October 5, 2011 Author #16 Share Posted October 5, 2011 Dear Me!!!!!!!! I didn't realize that this was going to raise the ire of some. I think that not wanting the smell of smoke in my sleeping area is quite legitimate. Actually, I am quite reasonable - I will even eat and drink for a short time with a bit of smoke, BUT, not sleep. Thanks to all that replied in a considerate manner. Ellen

Ellen This actually is mild compared to what usually happens on this subject and what probably will happen on this thread too, before the moderators pull it. This is usually a subject that I can get very heated, but you have not said anything to insult me with your post. It did seem like a valid question and not just posted to get the "smoking" ball rolling. So I will try to clarify politely to your post. As I've stated your cabin issue is non-existent if you are cruising in Jan. As for the eating and drinking with a bit of smoke, this as well will probably not be an issue for you. There are only a couple of places smokers can smoke. If you choose to have food or beverage on the port side of the pool (on most NCL ships that is where the smoking section is). They are well marked so easily avoided. The casino is smoking, so if you choose to be there. Balconies have permitted smoking, so if you are in a balcony cabin you may have some effect depending on the wind or lack there of. After Jan. smokers will have available to them about 4% of the ship in which they can enjoy their cigarette (even less if they smoke pipes or cigars), so as you can see with 96% of the ship, you can probably easily avoid those areas. Hope this helps.
In Toronto Posted October 5, 2011 Author #18 Share Posted October 5, 2011 Thanks. I did call NCL to make sure and yes, as of January 1, 2012 there will be no smoking allowed in cabins. I would definitely prefer a non connecting cabin. However, none are available so will go with what they have. Have never actually had a problem with noise from other cabins on our other cruises. Hope to book in the next couple of days and will join the Roll Call which I see is quite active (yes, I have been lurking!) Ellen
keystoneboarder Posted October 5, 2011 #19 Share Posted October 5, 2011 I make it a point to be the Noisey one. That way I can't complain and don't hear the people next door. As long as I'M having fun!

chrispb Posted October 5, 2011 #21 Share Posted October 5, 2011 As smokers can only use 4% of the ship, why the heck do we still pay full price?
che5904 Posted October 5, 2011 #22 Share Posted October 5, 2011 As smokers can only use 4% of the ship, why the heck do we still pay full price? We can use all of the ship, any place our little hearts desire. We can only smoke on 4%. The same as no smokers can use 100%, they just have to put up with our smoke if they choose to come into our 4%. Please don't invent things, this situation is crappy enough as it is. Bars7816 Posted October 6, 2011 #23 Share Posted October 6, 2011 That's very clever. I feel the same way. Can't people just get along? We always have a good time on vacations, and especially cruises, no matter what funny or weird things happen. Those are the things we talk about for years! Even the bad things -- like airport security searches and patdowns! And very posh hotels that keep us cooling our heels in the lobby for hours and hours waiting to check in. Stuff happens. We paid for it. By God, we're going to have a good time!!:):):)
