We're sailing on the Sky over Easter. Does anyone have any experience with 18-21 year olds? Our daughter is an 18 year old senior in High School. Is she allowed to join in with the teen group? Can she get in the bars and just not drink? Do they have a meeting of some sort for this age group? Thank you so much for any info. Donna

When my oldest was 18, he was too old for the teen group. But he met several people around his age and they all hung around in the bars and hot tubs. If your daughter is shy and not comfortable meeting people out of the blue they may let her hang out with the teen group, but I think it starts at age 13 and there may be no one her age, or very few. You never know. Good luck

WE just sailed with our grandaughters on Celebrity a few months ago. They were 17 (almost 18) and just turned 21. For the most part they hung with us. They did do a party cruise one afternoon without us and went to the top deck a couple of nights, but neither had any interest in the teen group. I think it depends on the maturity of the kids and most 18 are pretty mature. Both of them had no trouble in the casino though they didn't put much in the slots. It was just fun for a few mintures. As for the bars the cards are different for those under 21. They can get into all the clubs, but may have trouble being servered anything other than soft drinks. Still they will have fun. NMNita

Mom of teens

I sailed on the Dawn last June with my 18 y/o and his 16 yr old brother. The 18 year old was too old for the teen programs and the 16 year older was not interested.

They met up with other kids on board and went to the arcade and the movie theater, watched movies on the cabin tv and played games on gameboy which they brought along. We brought along frs radios to keep in touch on board and they worked pretty well.

We didn't see much of them except at dinner.

Both boys enjoyed the cruise but are not in a hurry to cruise again.

From what I can remember last time I was on, under 18 you are asked to leave at 11 pm. I have seen them ask for ID to prove you are over 18, but then again, I have seen 17 year olds stay in without a problem. But 18 and over you are fine.

I thought the policy was under 18 you have to leave after a certain time. Over 18, you can stay AND you can drink & gamble. Check w/ NCL before you leave b/c you need to know this before you get there.

I think there's something the parents / guardians can do to prohibit drinking on ship, but I don't know how strictly that's enforced / honored. In port, the drinking age for most foreign countries is 18, so beware.

On the better safe than sorry idea, talk to your daughter about alcohol, date rape drugs (don't put your drink down or accept a drink handed to you by anyone other than a crewmember), alcohol poisoning etc. Then, using your own judgment, make a decision about your policies as a family.

Personnally, I'd rather my teen had 1-2 drinks w/ me in my presence, then sneak a whole bunch somewhere else w/ heaven knows who & attempt to drive.

Happy cruising.

Trish
