18 yr. old - too old for teen program - too young for adult parties ??? What now?

From what we were advised is if they are still in high school they generally will allow them to join Club O2 at the age of 18. Bring their school ID along to prove. It's at the discretion of the Club O2 director. Unfortunate for us in March we didn't have any school ID with us as he is home schooled.

Thanks- that is our plan. That is an issue one doesn't think of in home schooling. And the 3 I will have with me are kids they would like to have in the O2- not interested in alcohol, all work with kids, polite- nice kids. Even mine;) Then of course I will feel a bit duped since we are bringing along the extra 2 because I was concerned that O2 would not be available. But no problem- they will all have a great time. And I will have a nice and relaxing time.

ok 18 is a adult. They can do everything but drink why would they need to find something to do or be in a kids group. I mean it is like saying to a alcoholic. what is there to do onboard? They find stuff and the cruise is not all about the drinking. 18 is a adult even if still in highschool. Maybe they want to hang with the adults instead of the kids.

Because their peers are high school kids, not adults. And lots of what goes on (hairy chest contests? the marriage game? etc etc) really are not targeted at high schoolers. I would be quite happy not to have my kids and friends hanging out with 30 year olds. Or even 25 year olds. My kids won't be drinking but a lot of slightly older folks will be- rather avoid that thanks.

Thanks for all the responses! I feel better. She is still in high school (Senior) so we'll shoot for the teen club and work it out from there. I'm sure she'll be fine -- it's her first cruise and I want it to be a fun one!:)

I was with a 18 yr old on my last sailing and the camp allowed him to be part of the group but, camp only had 10 kids in the camp at the time. camp said they wouldnt turn away 18 that was still in high school. hope this helps!

I am so glad to hear this. My DD loves the Teen Club, but will turn 18 before our traditional spring break cruise her senior year. I'm glad she can still attend the Teen Club, as she will still be in high school until May of that year!!

Our solution was to bring a friend! We were more than willing to invite and pay for our son's GF to go last year..... yes, he was 18 and she was almost 18, both high school students, but neither one of them had an interest in going to the kids club.... even our 16 and 14 year olds didn't want to go.... they met plenty of other kids their age on the ship, by the pool, playing basketball, dodgeball, and just hanging out.

] My toughest cruise was when DD was 16 and DS was 19. She was in tears and board every night..:(

Gee, I so dislike threads like.....My poor teen is going to be bored on our cruise.

Wow. If I had gotten to take a cruise at 16 or even 19. I would have been bowing over calling my parents blessed. Teens are so spoiled anymore.

Goodness, a vacation on a cruise ship, with entertainment, 4 star dinners, non stop ice cream, being waited on hand and foot and at the same time being taken to tropical ports of call!!!!!! I would have been in heaven!

When I was a kid or teen. We were lucky if we got to go camping on a weekend.

Teens count your blessings!

So happy to hear this as our son will be 18, but still in 11th grade (we held him back at 6) and was wondering the same thing about what he could do. Especially since he is bringing a younger friend with him on the cruise. I suppose he needs to show his school id card.

Our granddaughter never has a problem finding something to do. In July, she stopped by the "whatever the club is called" on the first night and was surprised at the number of young people her age. She met a young man who fast became her friend for the entire cruise.

At 18, your granddaughter can participate in every on-board activity, including shows, except the adults only comedy show, drinking and the casino

Hope you have a wonderful time. It is so good to share this with your grandchildren.

Shirley

What ship was she denied entry to the casino and the adult comedy show?

If she did not attempt to get into either, where did you get this wrong information?

Booze and serenity are restricted to 21 plus.

I'm traveling in November with a soon-to-be 21 year year old (in January). Will they really ask her to leave the Serenity area?!? Also, gambling is legal on the ship at 18?

Well, the rule is 21+. I've read that this is strictly enforced. Other times...not so much. Just be prepared that she may be asked to leave.

Yes, 18 year olds can gamble on the ship.

How is it enforced? Is there someone standing at the entrance checking ID's? What if my 14 year old is off doing something and needs to contact me in the Serenity area?

There's a sign and a pool attendant/waiter that was always around.(At least on the Glory)

So I guess your 14 year old could walk in but that would get some people's shorts in a knot (like mine). It is for Adults and there should be no exceptions. If you were in an adult bookstore, would it be OK if your child came in to get you?

If you sat near the entrance or along the barriers your child could walk up to one and call out to you is what some people did do.

Personally, I think the over 21 year old in Serenity is a joke. Think about it, a couple 18-just under 21 years old on their honeymoon can't enjoy the serenity deck? Or, you can get arrested and charged, can gamble money in the casino, but you can't use the Serenity deck on a ship? LOL.
