Mahogany Bay to West End

How much should four people traveling together expect to pay for a taxi from the cruise terminal in Mahogany Bay to the village of West End? Is there an easy to locate bus that makes the trip? How long would one expect the drive to take? Is the Mahogany Bay area itself a part of the island worth exploring?

I would reconsider a taxi. If you take a taxi and arrange for a time for them to return - you are stuck with that time. If the weather turns bad or you decide you'd like to leave at a different time, it may be awhile until they can get to you.

You should just book the freestyle tour with Ronystours. It's only $25 per person. You will get your own private driver for the entire day. You can stop and take photos where you like. The driver will stay with you - so no hassle trying to set up a time for the taxi to pick you up. We've used Rony 5 times and we only have wonderful things to say about his service. They have lots of knowledge about the island and are glad to take you anywhere you'd like!

Would the taxi prices "outside" the gate be much less than this - I have 3 people and $45 each way seems high.

Once you get to West End is it difficult to get a taxi back when you are ready?

This amount is typical for Mahagony Bay. It's further than Coxen Hole. $15 per person. Each way. You could do it with Bananarama cheaper because it includes your chair IF you plan to go to West Bay after seeing the village of West End. Or get a driver for the day and altho pretty much the same as a cab, you can come and go where ever on your schedule.

You will need to flag down a cab or van depending on where you are on the main road or plan something in advance for your driver to meet you to return.

Mahagony Bay is a "man made" cruise village. See the website Guest 2000 offered.

If you have 4 or more people in your group, book a tour with Bodden tours. It's $25 pp and you have them for the entire time you are in port. That way, you can go to the beach, but you also have your own taxi for seeing other things around the island. If you're going to pay that much, why not, right? :)

I agree! You can go to the beach but then you can also ask them to take you to other parts of the island. Roatan is so beautiful!

When we were in Roatan in 2010, we walked out to the taxi stand and there were 3 of us. We negotiated a rate of $25 per person round trip to taxi from the taxi area that is located by Mahogony Bay to Tabyana Beach and back. We did get a bit of rain, about 20 minutes when there but our taxi driver was close by as he just stayed there for the day. We told him how long we wanted to stay there and he was in the area close to us when it got close to the time we asked to leave. He offered to stop at shopping areas along the way which we passed on but we did stop at a small lighthouse on the way back to take some pictures. We never felt like we were stuck at all and if the weather had turned consistently bad we could simply find another taxi. He took us to Infinity I think its called and the reef was right off shore. It was quiet, almost no cruise ship people as everyone went to Mahogony Bay. I think you can also go on line and negotiate a rate with Banarama, a restaurant/bar area that is just down the way from Infinity and offers snorkel rental. They may be a bit cheaper and again plenty of taxis around so don't worry that you will be stuck. Tabyana makes the Mahogony Bay beach look dumpy

When we were last there we rented a SUV because we were a party of 5 for about $80. It is very easy to get around on the island.

Good Luck.

That's the idea I had. We have 7 people and just wanted to get to West End and the beach. Can't see paying some of these prices for tours and taxis. Who did you rent from? Did they pick you up at the port?
