doubledobles Posted October 20, 2011 #1 Share Posted October 20, 2011 We are looking to purhase wine in Funchal on our TA this November. Does anyone know if there's a wine shop in Funchal, and if so, where it would be located? Last time we were in Funchal (last year) there was a shuttle from the ship to the town, but we didn't look for a wine shop at that time.
wripro Posted October 20, 2011 #2 Share Posted October 20, 2011 I don't know of a specific wine shop but if you walk along the main street where there are tons of shops and restaurants I'm sure you'll find something. Also there are lots of shops that sell Madeira so stop into one of those and they can direct you.
doubledobles Posted October 21, 2011 Author #3 Share Posted October 21, 2011 Thanks, will try to do that. We've been to Funchal many times but never tried to buy wine.
LaCroisiereS'amuse Posted October 22, 2011 #4 Share Posted October 22, 2011 Try any of the "Pingo Doce" supermarkets in Madeira - they usually have an excellent wine selection...the larger the store the better, try the branch in the Dolce Vita centre http://www.dolcevita.pt/doc_externo_centro.aspx?param=6xaQnimFh6TUGczg8rpu2Zpy6mpcDcrLe2N/uVk2zInfxssLyA/ygroVgn+BvNjqd8YxnpVlwoUvXJ8O4P7bMq2pBPipnWpnxFOBGiAy+TUGKzFHbkIWBp0yVhllTDqJufDYex9IuJjklELMXVliX559TrNXZlIYIaldticE3vbcDwRVo9lw89rZ8cCpbkLyxtI4Hr2WrXk= If you're on a warm weather cruise try a well chilled bottle of Portuguese Vinho Verde.....very refreshing as a sundowner!! A good bottle should cost around €5. :)
wripro Posted October 22, 2011 #5 Share Posted October 22, 2011 If you have been to Funchal you probably already know this but whenever I have been there prior to a crossing I go to the big market and get flowers for my cabin. They are very reasonable and enhance the cabin during all those sea days.

doubledobles Posted October 23, 2011 Author #7 Share Posted October 23, 2011 That is a great idea, thanks. We'll take the shuttle into town and go to the market for flowers and wine. What fun!
cruzingrama Posted October 26, 2011 #8 Share Posted October 26, 2011 During the TA we did a year ago, we walked back to town from the drop off point of the 'baskets' (can't remember the official name) and on our way to the ship passed a wine-tasting place. It was really nice and we tasted all varieties and purchased some. Wish I could tell you the name of the place, but we drank all the wine!! I'm sure there are more. Dbedros Posted October 28, 2011 #9 Share Posted October 28, 2011 Go to the Funchal board and ask this question there is a local expert on the board.
