emckeeve Posted October 24, 2011 #1 Share Posted October 24, 2011 Our Fjord and North Cape cruise doesn't stop in Flam. Can we do the Flam Railway trip when docking at other places? Alesund? Bergen? Geiranger? Or is it not even worth it?
KirkNC Posted October 24, 2011 #2 Share Posted October 24, 2011 You can if you can get a train ride to Myrdal you can go on the railway to Flam and then back to Myrdal. I would think going from Bergen would be your best bet. Kirk
Rare TLCOhio Posted October 24, 2011 #3 Share Posted October 24, 2011 Our Fjord and North Cape cruise doesn't stop in Flam. Can we do the Flam Railway trip when docking at other places? Alesund? Bergen? Geiranger? Or is it not even worth it? Agree with Kirk that it is possible, but not very probable given the logistics to get there, do the train, make it back, etc.. Plus, Bergen is so super special, you would hate to miss your time in that great, historic city. Below is more info on that railway, some visuals, etc. Flam, with a population of about 500, is nestled in a tributary of the world's longest and deepest fjord. It is 128 miles long and has a maximum depth of 4,291 feet. On the question of how deep are these fjords, local say: “A mermaid could swim all the way to China.” Our chief attraction here was the 66-year-old Flam Railway. It is widely known as one of the world's best railroad journeys. It includes twenty tunnels and eight stops as it goes up the mountain. This rail lines rises from Flam’s gingerbread rail station going up 2,835 feet to Myrdal and this "Roof of Norway" rail station. Railroad website: http://www.flaamsbana.no/eng. THANKS! Enjoy! We then exit the train at the Vatnahalsen Hotel, to see the grounds, nearby mountains, etc. Lots of great views on this routing, up and down.: Here's a nice farm view along this great fjord and more Flam train views.:
screwcork Posted October 25, 2011 #4 Share Posted October 25, 2011 Hi, you can do it by train from Bergen. The timetables are here - just insert from Bergen to Flåm. http://www.nsb.no/timetables/ Screwcork
