peaches from georgia Posted December 10, 2011 #1 Share Posted December 10, 2011 I am NOT trying to start another smoking thread, but have an informational question only. Which bars or lounges still have a smoking section- Ocean Bar, Explorers Lounge, Crows Nest, Pinnacle Bar, Sports Bar??? Another thread, which I can't find right now, mentioned the bars do not seem as crowded anymore pre or post dinner. Ocean Bar always was mobbed for pre-dinner cocktails when they allowed smoking at the bar itself and had the smoking section with tables around the bar area. It always was our favorite gathering place and very popular. I wonder if lack of smoking areas has sent the smokers to their cabins/balcony for their pre-dinner cocktails. This is not meant as a debate on the pros and cons of bar smoking. Just wondering where smokers can go to enjoy a cocktail and a cigarette. Indoors, as of this moment only Bar that allows (depending upon the Hotel Manager) smoking is the Sports/Casino Bar and the Northern Lights Nightclub. (After January 15th the Sports/Casino Bar will be non smoking) Outdoors the only bar to allow smoking now and in the future is the Aft Lido Sea View Bar. Now the above is from the Hotel and Bar Managers on Westerdam, Oosterdam, Zuiderdam and the Nieuw Amsterdam. I am not sure of the Policies on the R and S class ships. THE BUDSYS Posted December 10, 2011 #4 Share Posted December 10, 2011 Dear Peaches, I believe each ship has different rules RE: bar smoking policies. They are posted on HAL's website under "onboard policies". I will say however these rules are not "carved in stone". Last Jan. my husband and I sailed on the Zuiderdam Panama Canal cruise. The info on the website stated that smoking was allowed in the sports bar, seaview bar on the aft deck poolside and the Northern lights Disco. We went to the sports bar for a pre-dinner cocktail and the bartender told us the bar was non-smoking. We didn't question it, but I thought it was rather odd as it is adjacent to the casino where smoking is allowed and there isn't even a wall dividing the two. The sports bar was pretty much empty for the entire cruise. My guess is the people who don't smoke stayed away because it smelled of smoke and the people who do smoke got a drink and took it into the casino which is what we did. "Lady Luck" did not join us on this cruise so those drinks in the casino were rather expensive!
Randyk47 Posted December 10, 2011 #5 Share Posted December 10, 2011 So, Crow's Nest is now NON SMOKING? If so, HOORAY!!!:):):) Things keep changing but on the R and S class ships there is a small smoking area in the Crow's Nest. On the Maasdam it was port side aft only. I believe they stopped smoking in the Crow's Nest on the Vista class ships a couple of years ago. Can't speak for the Signature class, the Crow's Nest may have always been non-smoking.
Jemima Posted December 10, 2011 #6 Share Posted December 10, 2011 There is no smoking section in the Crows Nest on ships with the Explorations Cafe and the library in the Crows Nest. Those ships are the two Signature Class ships and Vista class ships except the Noordam.
falcon10156 Posted December 10, 2011 #7 Share Posted December 10, 2011 From what I have read, it may also depend on the itinerary. For Antarctic cruises I have read that you can not smoke on the deck.. They may have to alter smoking/non-smoking areas based on this. I guess I will find out when I go in a just over 3 weeks. sail7seas Posted December 10, 2011 #8 Share Posted December 10, 2011 On Maasdam it varies. Sometimes there is a small section in Crows Nest with smoking tables but other cruises it is non-smoking. I don't think smoking is permitted at the bar in Crows Nest on any Maasdam cruises. I don't think the quiet bars on Nieuw Amsterdam were directly related to smoking. First and foremost, I think many people are sneaking liquor to their cabins. There probably are some buying it from the ship and drinking from bottles in their cabin or bring lots of wine aboard and drink that in their cabins to avoid corkage fee. Ocean Bar on Maasdam has been non-smoking on Maasdam for a while and it is often very crowded. Ocean Bar on Nieuw Amsterdam (totally non-smoking) was the most crowded on Nieuw Amsterdam. We couldn't stand the music there so by-passed that bar for the very quiet (empty) Pinnacle Bar or Explorers. Silk Den was always empty.
1 HappyCruiser Posted December 10, 2011 #9 Share Posted December 10, 2011 As more & more smoking areas are eliminated the few remaining areas are likely to be more crowded. This is fine with me since I can avoid them but when the cabin smoking is stopped in Jan I suspect they'll be a significant change at the remaining bars that do allow it.
