gf Posted April 9, 2005 #1 Share Posted April 9, 2005 Will be arriving in Anchorage, post-cruise and Denali trip, on Sat. afternoon, will be departing on 8PM Sunday flight. Plan Sat. night dinner at Simon&Seafort's. Ideas for best way to see some ANC sights on Sunday? Thanks for your help!
AkSusan Posted April 9, 2005 #2 Share Posted April 9, 2005 gf, The Alaska Native Heritage Center is a nice facility and just learned from checking out the web site http://www.alaskanative.net/364.asp that they will be running complimentary shuttles from a few downtown locations. Not sure where you're staying or if you're renting a car. If you're staying downtown, the Museum is great, if you have a car there's always a trip to Alyeska, Portage if you go south and Eklutna Lake, Thunderbird Falls if you go north. Just happen to have reservations for Simon & Seaforts on Thursday. They have fantastic food and love their grand scratch margaritas. Strongly suggest that you call and make reservations for there once you get to town or I've seen people walk in at 7 p.m. with no reservations and be told they could be seated at 9:45. Budget Queen Posted April 10, 2005 #4 Share Posted April 10, 2005 susan,we will be in anchorage on may 28th will denali be a good choice or still to early.. any suggestions.. we have two days before our cruise.. paula You don't have enough time for Denali Park, so I would suggest perhaps an overnight in Talkeetna to give a whole different Alaska touring area? Plenty to see an do along the way- Eagle River nature center, Eklutna Spirt house tour, Hatcher Pass and Independence mine, Wasilla Sled Dog Museum etc etc etc. Talkeetna is just excellent for McKinley flights. :)
gf Posted April 10, 2005 Author #5 Share Posted April 10, 2005 Thanks, Susan. We'll be at the Hilton and will not have a car. Since I haven't seen it mentioned, I assume there's no "city tour?" available?

AkSusan Posted April 10, 2005 #7 Share Posted April 10, 2005 susan,we will be in anchorage on may 28th will denali be a good choice or still to early.. any suggestions.. we have two days before our cruise.. paula Paula, 2 days for Denali would be pushing it. It's somewhere between 250-300 miles north of here and takes 6-7 hours according to how long you stop. Since Budget Queen told you some stuff north of town, I'll mention some stuff in town and south of town. There's lots to do around town and in the vicinity. Here's a link to the Visitor's Guide - http://www.anchorage.net/. Also the Alaska Native Heritage Center - http://www.alaskanative.net/ and our zoo http://www.alaskazoo.org/ You could go south and do Portage Glacier - http://www.fs.fed.us/r10/chugach/chugach_pages/bbvc.html, (you can walk to a hanging glacier) Alyeska/Girdwood and visit the Alyeska Prince do the tram http://www.alyeskaresort.com/page.asp?intNodeID=10933 Hope some of this helps, and any other questions, please ask. Since I haven't seen it mentioned, I assume there's no "city tour?" available? gf, Gray line has a tour and they may have an office in the Hilton (can't remember) or you'll be on 3rd Avenue and their office is on 4th a couple of blocks down- http://graylinealaska.com/sightseeingtours.cfm/mode/detail/product_id/1186 and their is a Trolley Service that runs out of the 4th Avenue Theater - http://www.wcities.com/en/record/,204857/282/record.html I think too if you order the Visitor's Guide from http://www.anchorage.net, they have a walking tour in their book or at their web site. Lots of local produce, gifts, etc. http://www.anchoragemarkets.com/. I even go several times a year. Susan in Anchorage :)
gf Posted April 10, 2005 Author #10 Share Posted April 10, 2005 Thanks for all the info and links! I ordered the Anchorage brochure although DH says "walk" is a 4-letter word!
gf Posted April 10, 2005 Author #11 Share Posted April 10, 2005 Checked out the Trolley and Market; both sound "low-key" and fun! The 3hr Gray Line beginning at 8:30AM may be too much after 11 days of touring and we may just sleep in, anticipating that "red-eye" flight! Really appreciate all the help! AkSusan Posted April 10, 2005 #12 Share Posted April 10, 2005 gf, You're welcome. Perusing the Saturday Market (would involve the DH 4 letter word but another four word that us women love (shop) :D and doing the hour trolley tour would probably work great for you. Both within a few blocks of each other. Susan in Anchorage :)
