Inappropriate Photography

My wife will be going on our first cruise next week. In fact, we are the first from both our families to go on a cruise. So, obviously, that means that we are being asked to heavily photograph this cruise. Are there places/times where it is inappropriate to take pictures? For example, would you stand out if you were to sit in a specialty restaurant (say, Le Bistro) and take pictures? How about taking pictures of your food? You get the drift...let me know.

The only place where it would be inappropriate (actually, not even allowed) is in the showroom during any of the production shows. I've seen many people take pictures at meals. That's not unusual. In fact, at some meals the ship's professional photographer often roams the dining room offering to take shots of couples and/or larger parties. In addition, it's fairly common to see waiters doing passengers the favor of taking a pic (so everybody can be in the shot).

Photography is also not allowed at most of the port authority buildings for security purposes. It is posted that they will take your camera and/or film and they aren't kidding. We saw a passengers digital camera being taken because he was taking pictures of the ship as we were waiting to board in LA.

We also take pictures of our food to remind us of how nice food can look when it doesn't come out of a paper bag!!

We have lots of crazy shots of us in the glass elevator, in our lifejackets, etc. Go ahead and have fun. :)

Some people might get a bit concerned if you start taking pictures in the public restrooms or see you under open stairwells :D

I have lots of pictures of the food from dinner. I even took pictures of the food on the buffet line to post here. It was during the great runny egg debate era. :) Other then the production shows I have seen passengers take pictures everywhere.

I wouldn't worry about that being inappropriate. I have videotaped one of our meals / food before. I think a lot of people take pictures like that. The only inappropriate pictures I think (besides the production shows) would be to take the same pictures that the professional photographers are taking. (I have seen someone do this). Other than that, take as many pictures as you want.

I may be wrong, but I don't think there are any restrictions against taking available light photographs of the show either. The only restrictions I have seen are no videos, and no flash photography. This might have changed recently, but a couple of years ago, I sat in the front row, and took pictures of the show without flash, even of the cruise director, and nobody said anything.

No joke, but when we were on RCL Voyager several years ago there were numerous people taking pictures of the urinal in the men's restroom!!! There was a brass plaque on the urinal that stated "This is a urinal for use". It was a beautiful 5 ft stone waterfall and while being "utilized" you looked out floor to ceiling windows. Don't worry, the urinal/wall "blocked" anyone looking in the windows from getting a peep show!

On our last cruise, I videotaped my BF at the buffet--from walking in the door to following him all along the buffet as he narrated what he felt like eating and why (he's a buffet junkie, and he's not at all fat either! ). I got a few looks but no one seemed to mind!

We took pictures all over, including several 'food' shots. DW was asked to not take pictures in the Casino (but we have several shots, just dont tell!)

We have taken many shots with our digital camera during stage shows, they normally ask for no video or 'flash' photos. Kinda hard to get good shots with the low and often colored lights, smoke, and all the movement, but can be done.

We have taken many shots, even set the timer, put the camera on a handrail, and took a pic of ourselves ;) .

All this time, I thought we were the only crazy folks taking shots of food, in the reflection in the glass elevators, in the lifejackets, etc. Even some great night shots, as we tend to stay up late.

Go for it, have fun!!

I forgot about the casino. It's definitely a no-no in a land-based casino, but I couldn't remember how strict they were on NCL ships. I'm guessing that you'd be fine taking pics in the casino when they're closed.

I'm a freelance journalist by trade and can't resist taking photos of anything and everything. Took about two rolls of film at a Celebrity grand buffet two years ago.

And yes, I have an entire photo album full of close ups of food plates. Was just showing our son a photo of our plate of appetizers during a recent trip to Poncho's Backyard in Cozumel. Son is stationed out of Ft. Hood, Tx. and is home on leave from a year in Baghdad. He thought the photo was terrific and sat here identifying each item on the plate.

While thread discussion has been about taking own shots themselves, we mut not forget the avantage of asking fellow cruisers to use our cameras to take a photo of us as well.

Fellow cruisers, waiters at dinner, bartenders and fellow cruisers are more than willing and happy to take your pic on your own camera. Just tell them how to click the camera and poof - you've got a photo of yourselves together - at a fraction of the cost the ship's photogs will charge.

On our first cruise a few years ago, DH & I were too shy to ask anyone to take a photo of us on our own camera. We ended up standing in front of a large mirror on NCL Majesty and shooting away into the mirror. We actually got an acceptable photo after several tries -- better than that, we still laugh about the looks we got from people around us as ``shot'' ourselves in front of the reflecting mirror.
