Tourist Village?

I keep reading references to the "Tourist village" in Belize. Just what is that? What would we find there?

it's where the tenders dock. Primarily a number of shops offering the typical tourist oriented stuff you buy at any port, including the ubitquous Diamonds International and a Pharmacia. Also a couple of small restaurants and bars, incluing the infamous Wet Lizard, known for it's hot conch fritters and cold Belikins (Belize's beer). It is walled in from the street side so you have to enter and exit via door ways where you need to your S&S card to gain re-entry. Just outside these doorways are a number of somewhat aggressive vendors and hawker sof various independent tours and horse carriage rides. Also it's where the busses for ship excursions lineup.

Was there last week and my wife and I decided to hire a driver to take us on a tour of the city and learn about the culture and history. We never got out of the car. He was in a big hurry. We did the whole trip in less than an hour and it cost us $70. We were most unhappy and complained; but to no avail. They just said "sorry". Stay away from the guys in the white shirts promoting tours! They are more interested in money than providing a good tour.
