Barcelona Lodging Location

We are planning on doing 3 nights in Barcelona before our Mediterranean cruise in September. We are a group of 4 and I have been looking at apartment rentals on the Home Away website. Can anyone recommend what part of the city is a good area to stay in? I am looking for an area that is safe and convenient to all the tourist sights. Is Playa Cataluna a convenient area? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Plaza (not Playa) de Cataluña (in Catalan it is Plaça de Catalunya) is an excellent, central area to stay.

The closer to Plaça de Catalunya, the more expensive. We stayed in the Hotel Astoria that I found on Venere.com. It is a 5 minute walk from the Diagonal Metro. Cost 69E per night for a very good three star.

I would add that anywhere above Placa Catalunya is in the neighborhood called the Eixample( ay-shom-pluh) and is a fine ,upscale, central area!
