What are some ideas for transport from Vancouver airport to pier?

Family restaurants within a few blocks of the hotel would include:

Rosie's on Robson (a pub but they have a family area)

Moxies...just around the corner from the hotel on W. Georgia

White Spot .... very much a Vancouver tradition for over 80 years, on W. Georgia about 4 blocks from the hotel.

Thanks. Looks like good potential dinner places.

From the airport, a taxi wont be much different in cost than 4 skytrain rides (especially if you buy individual tickets - due to the surcharge on airport bought single tickets).

There will be 5 of us this trip. Would a taxi minivan be able to accomodate all of us with 5 pc's of luggage or should we look at shuttle service from YVR to Downtown Vancouver?

A mini-van cab will only handle 4 of you and there is no longer a shuttle so its Canada Line or a limo. Aerocar limo service as a walk up rate of $52 from Canada Place to the airport.

Aerocar have the contract for limos from the airport, or a minivan taxi (you might have to wait briefly for one). http://www.yvr.ca/en/getting-to-from-yvr/hired-sedans-limousines.aspx The Aerocar contracted deal is $52 (+tip & 12% sales tax). I know they have slightly larger vehicles as well.

Skytrain would be $31.50 for the 5 of you if buy a book of 10 two-zone tickets at the airport 7-11 inside the terminal -- which amazingly is cheaper than 5 tickets purchased on the platform (due to $5 surcharge on single tickets, but not tickets out of a multi-pack). Depending on where your hotel is this may or may not be a great way of doing it. Trains are roll on roll off, and there are elevators at all the stations.

As for meals downtown, Robson street really has a little of everything. The stretch of Robson from Burrard to Beatty really has something for everyone; cheap noodle places, Indian, Middle Eastern, sushi -- you name it; it's a popular lunch spot (most places are really there for the lunch crowds). very casual, but nice places for dinner would might include;

- India Gate (Robson just E of Seymour)

- Memphis Blues BBQ (opening soon on Robson near Homer)

- Dunn's Meats (on Seymour just south of Robson)

- Noodle Box (on Homer just south of Robson)

for lunch there's even more choices, some of my favourites are

- Viet Sub (Vietnamese sanwiches and Pho)

- Falafel Maison (Mediterranean)

- Japadog (featured on a ton of cooking shows)

- Grounds for Appeal (Indian, located in the Law Society building on Cambie just south of Robson)

- Coco Noodle (also on Robson) -- looks like hell, but great noodles and soup

Google Maps will help you pinpoint any of these.

If you head further into the Yaledown district, on Mainland Street just south of Nelson, there is a whole higher end restaurant district where you can get just about anything you want.

Guess we'll use them. We used Aeroshuttle last year for 2 of us and were happy with their service. I see the cost for their shuttle is $14 pp.

Thanks Scottbee and Putter. :D

I'll concur, and heartily, with SBs recs for Coco Noodle, Japadog and Viet Sub as nearby, cheap & good; the rest of his and PDs recs won't steer you wrong either (though personally I'd avoid Noodle Box because it's almost twice the price of any other noodle place in the area and not as good as several of the cheaper options). I'll also add:

local Poutine joints La Belle Patate and Fritz European Fry House - the latter is nearer your hotel at Davie & Granville;

Subeez (Homer & Smithe) as IMHO the best of the nearby pubs for food (new chef within the last year, menu overhauled, very family friendly - we've seen many infants & toddlers not just teens);

Medina Cafe (Dunsmuir & Beatty) for very unique brunch - go queue early though!;

Ramen Jinya (Robson & Hamilton) as IMHO the best noodle joint near you (I just moved away from Homer & Robson, looooove noodles, and tried everywhere within a couple of blocks at least twice each to find the best - Jinya's premium pork broth is superb)

If there's any dietary specifics for your teens apart from big portions, ask and I'm sure you'll get more detailed recommendations;)

I added Noodle Box as it's someone more upscale compared to the others. However, it's much more expensive (and not as good) as the original in Victoria.

FYI, We tried to use Aerocar and there were no available vehicles when we arrived so they referred us to a mini-van cab. They were able to accomodate 5 of us nicely with 5 lg pcs of luggage. It cost a little under $40 for our ride from YVR to the Westin Bayshore.

We thought we could do the same the following day to get to the pier and were told that the mini-vans were only available at the airport. Therefore, we had to take 2 cabs to the pier. Price was $8.00 per cab.

"mini-vans were only available at the airport. "

I would say that you were told a big lie or a lot of horse manure - mini - vans are available throughout the city - I suspect it has more to good with greed - the longer fare to the airport will generate a bigger tip.

A year ago when heading for my Panama Canal cruise I teamed up with some CC'ers who were staying at a hotel across the street from me and we had no trouble getting a mini - van to get us to Ballantyne Pier and that was on a day when there were 4 ships in town.

Cheers

Just to chime in here, we use/need a mini van cabs and have had no trouble getting one at hotels through out the city. However, the city cab fleet is only about 17% mini-vans so you do have to wait a few extra minutes for one. I am surprised to learn that they accommodated 5 of you as they usually only have a single pax in front and 3 in the back seat. Many are fitted for wheelchairs in the back so they don't typically have a flip up 3rd row of seats.

We probably had a wheelchair cab because that's where he stored all the luggage. There was a flip up seat too.

Just in case anyone is referring back to these emails, or has a craving for White Spot. The White Spot on West Georgia is no more! There's a new condo tower going up, so it's been knocked down. According to their website there is one on Granville and Drake (still downtown, but quite a bit further south), and there will be a "new location" coming soon.

Excellent point and it has been mentioned in other threads. I drove by the site a week or so ago and there is nothing left but a very large hole. The redevelopment will include a 22 storey office tower to house Telus's headquarters and then behind it is the 44 storey, 500 unit condo tower. The other downtown White Spot would be at Georgia and Cardero....anyone know where the new White Spot will be located? My guess is it will be back in the Telus complex.

I will ask my friendly White Spot server the next time I am there if he has heard anything about a new location.

There are a couple of locations in Yaletown that are boarded and being worked on so i wonder if that might not be an possibility given all the other major players are located there.

Cheers

  • 4 weeks later...

We flew in on a Saturday and after getting thru the customs line from hell I walked from the international terminal to the domestic, went down stairs to the 7-eleven, and bought a book of ten 1 zone passes for 21.00.

We walked out to the nearby station and rode into the Yaletown/Roundhouse station and from there walked a few blocks to the Grenville Ramada.

6.30 for the three of us ; -)

Glad to hear it worked out well for you. $21.00 for 10 tickets is a much better deal than $22.50 for three (if you'd bought on the platform).

Just chiming in to point out that one zone tickets are only good for downtown to/from the airport on Saturdays, Sundays, holidays and after 6:30 pm on weekdays. Mon-Fri before 6:30 pm you would need the two zone tickets (can also be purchased in 10 ticket books from 7-11 for $31.50 - regular 2 zone fare is $3.75). I'd hate anyone to end up with a fine because they had the wrong ticket for the time of day....

Glad it worked out for you, there is no question the Canada Line is an asset for for the city, it is just a matter that it is not a "one size fits all" solution....but when it works it works well.

If you are arriving not during the one zone time but feel you will be mostly/only needing one zone tickets, rather than buying a book of two zones for more, buy the one zone and add fare at the stations when you need two zone. We didn't need to do this but had it explained to us by a helpful local guy ; -)

Coming from the airport to River ROck Casino would you take the skytrain or take a cab.

Also we are arriving at 7:30pm Thursday, so the hotel is within the one zone. I assume it is $5.00pp plus a one zone senior fair and a one zone adult fare, I am assuming it is around $15 total. A cab going to the River Rock would cost about the same?

How long does it take to get thru customs?

On Friday morning we are going from the hotel to Waterfront. Again one senior and one adult. I assume around $6 for two verses a cab for around $35??

Would we buy the tickets in a book or individually? We are coming back to the airport in two weeks on a Friday as we are doing a B2B, so would a book still be good. There could be a total of three trips on the train. Or,,, would you take a cab to the airport from the ship? Flight leaves at around 12:45pm. H

to Riverrock,7:30pm it's one zone ($2.50), but the gotcha is that for single tickets bought on the platform at the airport stations, there's an extra $5 airport surcharge tacked on. To get to River Rock, it's going to be $10 tops, maybe $12

For your trip to downtown/Canada Place on a Friday, just leave after the morning rush (say after 9:30am), $3.75 for the full fare to downtown, $2.50 for a senior.

Going back to the airport, again $3.75 for an adult, $2.50 for a senior.

I would just stick to single tickets due to the mix of one/two zone and adult/concession fares. And enjoy your (brief) visit to Vancouver!

There is a $10 airport surcharge for two, plus regular fare of $5 total??. Would a cab cost the same? Which one would you take with four pieces of luggage. Luggage is set up carryon on top of suitcast for easy pulling. H

If you think you will be well served by taking the Canada line (the train) and have any expectation of having use for any other bus or train rides while in Vancouver go downstairs in the domestic treminal and purchase the ten pack one zone tickets. This avoids the 5.00 surcharge, saves you .40 on each ticket and leaves you with 8 additional rides to get around town with. If you need a two zone ticket you can add fare (1.50 maybe?) for the trips that require it, on the platform.

yes, each ticket from the airport (one zone) is $7.50 (2.50 for the ticket, $5 for the surcharge). if you didn't have need for buying a book of faresavers (and because of your mix of adult & concession fares, along with 1/2 zone - it's not worth buying a book).

For that reason I would just take a taxi to River Rock
