Alaskanb Posted January 31, 2012 #26 Share Posted January 31, 2012 Did you have any favorites? I'm thinking the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center would be fine rain or shine. It's our first trip to Alaska but we love museums big and small. We have the Alaska State Museum in Juneau on our to do list and the smaller one in Ketchikan if we have time. http://www.museums.state.ak.us/asm/asmhome.html http://www.city.ketchikan.ak.us/departments/museums/index.html Skagway is full of the "gold rush" buildings. http://www.nps.gov/klgo/index.htm
Rustys Mom Posted February 1, 2012 #27 Share Posted February 1, 2012 If you are planning on purchasing at Sierra Trading Post, go to their web site and sign up for Deal Flyers. When You get a coupon for a discount and the item is on sale buy it. You will get a better than employee price.

TxDarlin Posted March 17, 2012 #30 Share Posted March 17, 2012 I'm considering purchasing this polyester lined Boss 35mil PVC raincoat from ACE Hardware for our upcoming June 2012 Alaska Southbound cruise on Royal Caribbean. The weight of PVC seems durable, the coat comes just below the knee, and the hood is removable. My husband prefers the shorter length forest green version. Would something like this be suitable rain gear? It looks like it would also provide wind protection with the appropriate sweatshirt underneath for warmth. May not be fashionable, but it doesn't actually look too bad... and wouldn't you rather be dry in a down pour, rather than fashionable?
Goldiedog Posted March 17, 2012 #31 Share Posted March 17, 2012 Glad to hear the White Pass Train is still good in the rain. That is one thing I thought I'd like to do but read that it wasn't good if the weather wasn't clear. We did the White Pass Train up and coach down last September, fogwas so thick we did not see a thing.
Northern Aurora Posted March 18, 2012 #32 Share Posted March 18, 2012 To return to the original question about back up ideas for bad weather in ports, the Alaska State Museum is in downtown Juneau. Another idea for beer lovers in Juneau would be a visit to the Alaska Brewing Company. Ketchikan has two city museums. The Tongass Historical Museum is downtown and features info on the general history of the area. The Totem Heritage Center is an easy walk from downtown, and as the name suggests, features totems. Skagway has a great little museum called the Skagway Museum and Archives. It is located in the historic district. The building was originally the McCabe College.
