Just got my Cruise Industry News and the following Headline DEFINITELY caught my attention:

Industry Adopts New Muster Drill Policy

Thursday, 09 February 2012

On behalf of the global cruise industry, a new emergency drill policy requiring mandatory mustering for embarking passengers prior to departure from port was announced today by the Passenger Shipping Association (PSA) in cooperation with the Cruise Lines International Association and the European Cruise Council.

The new policy follows the industry’s announcement on Jan. 27 of a Cruise Industry Operational Safety Review in response to the Concordia incident and as part of the industry’s continuous efforts to review and improve safety measures.....

Full Article is here: http://www.cruiseindustrynews.com/cruise-news/6785-industry-adopts-new-muster-drill-policy.html

So this is every cruise ship on every cruise line!! YES!!!!

Joanie

Let's make sure all our cruise lines know that Life Boat/Muster Drills ARE MANDATORY and if all the lines follow Holland America Line's new policy of No show and/or refuse to participate your backside is off the ship!!!

That's a step in the right direction, but I still don't think it will do much good if you can't utilize all the lifeboats in an emergency situation.

That was my thought as I read the article.

If anyone is ever so unfortunate to have a Captain such as the one Concordia had, all the life boat drills in the world won't make a difference.

Many many posts and posters have Domnica Cemortan as the reason for the distraction on the bridge that caused the tragic event. Her relationship with Schettino has been the substance of many posts and many posters have leveled a degree of blame at her. Maybe, just maybe Schettino wasn’t trying to impress Domnica Cemortan at all. From the various sources indicated below, it is possible to draw some inference that Schettino was trying to impress his male friend, head waiter, Antonello Tievoli. If we are to harshly judge Domnica Cemortan, why isn’t the same harsh judgement leveled at Tievoli?

I guess it’s easy to find “fault” with the relationship with Schettino and Cemortan because it fits our stereotypical scandal.

Cemortan has denied any impropriety, but that suspicion still pervades many posts.

Tievoli’s relationship with Schettino has not been put under suspicion on this thread. Cemortan dines with Schettino equates to scandal. Tievoli serves a meal for Schettino each evening equates to him just serving a meal.

Cemortan, a Costa employee, registers, is assigned a cabin and stays on board equates to a scandal. Tievoli stay on board for another week no mention other than he stay on board. Roberto Bosio the “second captain” gets a ride to the next port no mention other than getting a ride to the next port.

Many assume that because Cemortan was on the bridge therefore Schettino was showing off to her, yet from the sources below it can be seen that Schettino was showing off to Tievoli.

Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported that the captain, Francesco Schettino, allegedly performed a 'sail-by' close to Giglio's rocky shores to please his head waiter, Antonello Tievoli, 46, who comes from the island. ……..

http://news.ninemsn.com.au/world/8404117/cruise-captain-sailed-close-for-head-waiter

According to Corriere della Sera, shortly before the accident the captain called head waiter Antonello Tievoli to the bridge saying, "Antonello, come see, we are very close to your Giglio," said witnesses quoted by the newspaper.

Schettino was trying to give him some pleasure by steering the huge cruise ship close to the rocky coasts of the Tuscan island, the report said.

http://www.newser.com/story/137633/captain-of-costa-concordia-passed-close-to-shore-for-headwaiter.html

Cruise Captain Changed Route 'for Headwaiter'

SCHETTINO INVITED WAITER TO THE BRIDGE TO WATCH

Many will point to the reports of lingerie found in the captains cabin. Its easy to assume it belongs to Cemortan. Maybe, just maybe Schettino has purchased said item/s for his wife. Maybe his wife has shared his cabin on previous cruises and has left them behind. Maybe Schettino is a cross dresser. Maybe, just maybe the laundry was delivered to the incorrect cabin We can easily discount that because it doesn’t fit our stereotypical scandal.

I’m not trying to be an apologist for Schettino, Cemortan or any others in this tragic event, but I fear that it’s just too easy to apportion blame on Cemortan based on a preconceived mind set.

I will now have to be prepared to feel the heat from the flame/s.

My take on the difference is this: A passenger (Cemortan) was invited to the bridge, whereas a crew member (Tievoli) summoned to the bridge. I don't care what the sex is of the captain, the passenger or the crewmember - in my opinion, a passenger should not be present during delicate navigational maneuvers.

To get away from the Media hanging about his front door the Ex-Captain of the Costa Concordia paid a fleeting visit to the UK with an unknown blonde female. Ignoring his tomtom he ended up visiting the Solway firth and not knowing the tidal conditions there ended up in difficulty.

The 2 Coastguard officers had to frog march the Capt Schettino back to the area to ensure that there was no one else in the vehicle. Various items

of female attire was found still in the water logged vehicle to which he replied 'me not knowie' 'me no unnerstandi' 'itsa frameup'

Local enquiries are continuing into the incident and the AA are asking some serious questions

I think the new saftey drill requirement that embarking passengers must have a safety drill before sailing is good. But, I wonder if it goes far enough. I think it should require visiting two alternate assembly stations, one of which must be the assigned life boat locaton.

What the heck. In case you don't want to read the article I linked above.

A figure of Costa Concordia cruise ship captain Francesco Schettino is displayed outside a shop on San Gregorio Armeno street in Naples on Feb. 7.

Is that a "visual double entendre" ? ;)

John Eaves, the US attorney representing a number of Concordia passengers will be asking for 2 million dollars for each of them.

Here is the article just coming out of Italy (Google Translate)

If a cruise line crew can not convince a passenger to participate short of putting them off then there is something wrong with the crew.

You are blaming the crew because the passengers are being unreasonable?

I suppose it is the island's fault for allowing a rock to be in a dangerous position where it might cause damage to the ship.

Just curious, could you explain what you feel is a "delicate navigational maneuver?"

Yes, I am blaming the crew if they can't convince passengers to attend the muster drill. Dealing with unreasonable passengers comes with the territory of being crew.

I deleted your red herring. A lot of posters on this thread like to make up something to belittle an opposing view.

Nothing wrong with any crew on any ship. It would be the passenger who is wrong in every case, and believe me there have have been at least 3 put off of Holland America Cruise ships in the last couple of weeks. That includes the 1st man that refused to the point that Broward County Sheriffs Officers were there as he was Escorted from the Westerdam, where he'd been for the 2 weeks prior. But then those 2 weeks were before the Concordia tragedy.

Some people think they are to special to not have to do anything they are told must be done because it is their vacation.... These are the ones who endager everyone........

Some people think they are entitled.

I know I am entitled!!

I am entitled to being in full compliance of whatever safety drills are necessary for my safety and the safety of all my fellow passengers.

The best Convincing of any passenger needed is to put them off the ship, under police escort if needed!!

If you do not comply with an airline crew persons directive what happens to you?? You are met by the local police department.... Nuff said...

That is not "convincing" by any definition.

It is not passengers who are endangering you. It is the cruise line. The passengers did not sink the Concordia.

And I think that you are quite right, just for the fact that every passenger needs to know his/her muster station. They need to memorize the number......even tho it's on their SeaPass......or what ever any cruise line calls their room key/debit card.

It's not fun for anyone sitting on the sunny side of the ship......in hot weather, so it would be great that once everyone is checked in to their muster station, the whole group could move to the theater or some other area, where the rest of the drill would be held in the comfort of air conditioning. That is just a thought.

In the case of a real emergency.......people have been asked to......if time permits, to go to their stateroom, get warm clothing, and medications, and then head to their muster station.

I don't care how many times a person has sailed, (we will head out on our 181st cruise next month), it's important to show up for drill.

And, by the way, when you board an aircraft to head to your cruise ship, how many of you count the rows (how many seat backs to I need to touch to reach an exit)........which, to me, is just as important as the muster drill. Most people, unfortunately, don't have a clue!

I read this today: http://travel.usatoday.com/cruises/post/2012/02/cruise-ship-muster-drill-policy/623944/1 "Every vacationer boarding a cruise ship will receive a safety briefing before the vessel sets sail under a new industry-wide policy announced today."

I wonder if lines like NCL will change their policy of having the drill in the theater instead of at the actual locations of the lifeboats.
