Spike&Jane Posted April 16, 2005 #3 Share Posted April 16, 2005 How many actually buy the license? What is it for, do the radios still work w/o license? There are actually two types of radios that are available, FRS which is Family Radio Service radios which are 14 channel and 500 milliwatts and GMRS radios have 22 channelsand are 1 watt or more. The FRS radios do not need to be licensed but the GMRS radios are supposed to be. No body I know that uses the higher powered radios ever license them. From my experience with them the more powerful ones don't much have much more range than the less powerful ones. A lot of families and groups use them on board.
