Stopping at Windsor Castle on the way from London to Dover

It is out of your way. There are other places to see on the way to Dover including Canterbury and Leeds Castle. There are not a bit like Windsor but are wonderful in their own way!!!

Thanks..we've already been to Canterbury and Leeds Castle.

Also, we are staying in the Mayfair section of London , if that makes a difference as to how far out of the way Windsor Castle would be.

That really won't make any difference..It's just out of the way.

How about visiting the medieval village of Rye which is south of London at about the 5 o'clock position on the coast? Then the driver could go east about 1 1/2 hours to Dover. We did this last year with a rental car. It would be like driving in an "L-shape". It is a lovely village and well worth a visit.

Mayfair is about in the center of London. Probably would cost you about an hour or so of extra driving time depending on traffic to go to Windsor then back to Dover (plus sightseeing time). If you have enough time, then you could do it, but not convenient as a side trip going to Dover.

Edit: Again using Google Maps, Mayfair to Windsor to Dover is a 2 hour 20 minute drive. Mayfair direct to Dover is 1 hour 36 minutes.

Others have pointed to the distance as one factor, How about time at the windsor?

Windsor and great windsor park is going to require you a good 4 to 5 hours to rush through it all. There is a lot to see in the area

You may be trying to put too many hours in the day, like a 12 hour day your talking about.

Secret: you can come back, maybe stay across the Thames from Windsor at Cliveden ( a fantastic former home to the prince of wales) and see it all in casual style

Arrive a day or so earily or or leave London a day sooner,

Go out to Clivden manor to stay( you feel like a windsor). There they have a quaint little 1920 motor yacht to cruise you down to Windsor Castle and back, see windsor at a casual pace, return to Clivden and depart from there.

I urge you to check out Clivden as a place to stay and as an experience in its own right.

Cheers

Instead of trying to cram in a visit to Windsor, which really requires more time than a short stop on the way to Dover, why not get to Dover early and spend some time at Dover Castle, if you haven't already seen it. Interesting Castle and WWII history, if you're interested in that kind of thing.

Also, there's nothing wrong with a private transfer, but if you can manage your luggage, London to Dover is a very easy train ride. You can even get a high speed train from St Pancras Station in London to Dover that will get you there in just over an hour. Its not even a five minute cab ride from the train station in Dover to the ship. You can drop off your luggage at the ship and get a cab to the castle.

We've already been to Dover Castle and Canterbury , and are going to stop at Leeds Castle (and perhaps another site) on the way from Dover to a Heathrow hotel at the end of the cruise. We were looking for a stop on the way from London to Dover , but it appears from most posts , that Windsor Castle would probably not be appropriate.

As for the train ride, I don't think my wife's luggage would be "manageble".

Thanks for your suggestions.

How about doing things in reverse? Leeds Castle and Canterbury are on the way from London to Dover and you can stop there en rounte from Mayfair to the ship. Windsor Castle is close to Heathrow airport. As a matter of fact, we were looking at transfer services from Dover to our Heathrow Airport hotel last year and several offered stopovers at Windsor - one company was even based there and advertised they would take you from Dover to Windsor and store your luggage until a prearranged time where they would pick you up and take you to the Heathrow Hotel. There is also a public bus that goes from Heathrow to Windsor- you can go directly from Dover to the hotel and then take the bus back and forth to Windsor.

We used a transfer service from Dover to Heathrow, and spent the day with the owner, who took us to Canterbury, Leeds, and a pub lunch, dropping us off at the hotel around dinnertime.
