Things to do without excursions

My family and I are going to La Romana in July and we wondered if there were things to do there without booking en excursion. Can we get to the beach on our own? Are the beaches near the ship? Is there shopping?

We are going there in March. Our group is doing a private tour of the cigar factory and then going to Bayhabibe beach to do Stand Up Paddle. Both sound like fun! I'll let everyone know how this port goes for us. Look through previous posts here and you can get other ideas too. Good Luck!

We got off the Carnival Freedom on Sunday and are happy to report there is a small shop right off the port. It sells expensive boose and stuff. If you cross the walkway where the bathrooms are on the right is a little booth with 2 ladies selling tickets for buss rides to downtown($5 round trip) and Altos Chevron($7 round trip). Altos Chevron is a quiet bus ride to a private country club and fancy shops. It was pretty and did have a few people selling homemade wares. The whole thing is made of cobblestones so if you have trouble walking go downtown.

btw for bargains on rum, coffee, vanilla, cigars, alcohol etc head to Jumbo supermarket in La Romana town. It's huge you can't miss it. They have the best prices.

How long was the tour you took to Altos Chevron? Or did you just hop on a bus... do your thing and then hop back on another bus going back to the pier? TY

$7 round trip there is no tour guide for that price. Leave when you want. We did not get off of the ship right away and did not know what we were going to do. We went to Altos Chevron, one of our favorite places so far. What a great little village, a must see. You would have time to do both Altos Chevron and Down town if you get off of the ship right away.
