Review for Hyatt, Long Beach

Quick review for you -

Not on a cruise this time, but we just returned from a few days in Long Beach where we stayed at the Hyatt Regency. Please note, this is a top-rated hotel on member Bruin Steve's "short list" of Long Beach hotels, and others here have recommended it as well. Last time we stayed at the Renaissance Hotel, also wonderful, just FYI.

The Hyatt is undergoing a complete renovation at this time and we were given one of the newly renovated rooms. It actually looks more like a studio apartment than a hotel room, with eclectic touches, modern furniture, and entirely new bathroom with glass shower enclosure (no tub, just a shower), and so on. The walls are thin; we did hear renovation/construction noise during the day and did experience some water interruptions, as the front desk staff noted we might. No biggie.

The bed was comfortable and we paid a bit more for a harbor-view room. Glorious! We were on the fifteenth floor.

The hotel is located in the harbor area of Long Beach, which is completely walkable, IMO. We stayed three days and rented a car on one of the days to drive down the coast as far as Laguna Beach. There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance, and a large Wal Mart if you are so inclined. Obviously, February is a quiet month there. The weather was "coolish", although we enjoyed the warm sunshine on our last day. The streets were bare, with very few tourists. From the hotel, you can take a free shuttle bus called "Passport" and go over to the Queen Mary for the day, if you wish. Getting around this immediate area is easy.

Breakfast: The Omelette Inn (2 days), and the Long Beach Cafe (last day), both have great food, large portioins, many locals! You know it's good.

Lunch: Had lunch only one day, at In-N-Out Burger, which we don't have in Canada! Ha! Anyway, it was tasty, but not sure I would go back. Five Guys is better. ;)

Dinner: Walked to dinner every night - Gaucho Grill on Pine Avenue, delicious! Argentinian food, served up by the owner himself, seemed delighted to have customers. ;) The other two nights we ate at a couple of the chain restaurants, Boston's and Famous Dave's BBQ. I know, don't judge. They were close by. ;):p

Flat cab rates: $23.00 (plus tip) from Long Beach Airport to many of the hotels in the area, ours included. Both times, the meter was on and the total was over that, so it was a good thing. :) The list of flat rates between various points was posted in the vehicle; if you need a price let me know and I will try to remember for you.

All in all, a perfect little getaway due to killer pricing on Jet Blue from Seattle to Long Beach. We would stay at the Hyatt again if we ever sail out of San Pedro or Long Beach.

Thanks for the review, we stayed there about 18 months ago and thought is was very good value for the $65 we paid for it bidding on Priceline...I refused to hit the bid of $85 for the Crown Plaza in San Pedro and really fixed them by paying the $20 cab fare back to the World Cruise Center. We had tried to get into PF Chang's for dinner but it had a big line up so we went across the street to Famous Dave's and it was kind of fun. We have a couple of In N' Outs around here in AZ and always miss them when we go home in the spring.

We had never eaten at Famous Dave's either and it was kind of fun. We had one of the rib entrées which were good but more family style....would we go again....sure we would. Now it's hockey night in AZ, we have a Shaw Direct system here so Go Canucks Go!
