Shopping in Galveston

As we are flying in from Oz, wondering if there is a decent supermarket, or pharmacy, (think you call them drug stores:)), within walking distance of the Galvez? This will save hassle of packing toiletries and seasick medication. How late are these shops open on a Friday?

Thanks, Jen

I have heard about your Walmart stores in the states. Sounds like we should be able to pickup all our necessities there. Thanks also for the tip re checking with Galvez for transportation. Does Galveston have late night shopping, or is it 9 to 5 hours? Would be handy if they were open late, as we could then concentrate on sightseeing during the daylight hours, and shop later.

Go to the Walmart. It's open 24 hours a day and will be a real experience for you!

It is now on our list. Can't wait to see if it is as good as we hear. Nice way to begin a holiday!!

Thanks for your help.

The Wal-Mart is located close to 61st and Seawall, which is a ways from the Galvez but gives you an ideal where it is. You can find it easily on Google Earth.

Thankyou yet again....have googled, also looked at the online for Walmart....looks as is we will need more than a half hr in this store...LOL. This saves the hassle of packing the toiletries for long haul air.

One last question.....would you 'stroll' back along this area with DH after nine at night ie safe??

We have walked to Wal-Mart before from that area. We stay at the Best Western which is next to QI. It is a walk and I would want to carry more than a couple of bags back....but it is doable. The QI is like in 5900 block of Seawall and WM is like 6700 block. There is also a Kroeger's Grocery just on the other side of the BW that is very good if you don't want to walk clear to Walmart.

As for being safe, we do quite of bit of walking along the seawall....some at night....and I have always felt safe. Some of our most beautiful walk have been along the beach at night or very early morning. I wouldn't hesitate....but as always be aware of your surroundings because you never know.

Walking along Seawall Blvd is very safe. Kroger has extended hours and will be open until at least 9pm. WalMart is open 24 hours.

Here's an idea...rent one of those 2 or 4 person surrey bicycle contraptions that you find all over Seawall Blvd and ride that to the grocery store. Then you won't have such a difficult time hauling your bags back to the hotel.

Any close bars and restaurants within walking of the Best Western and Quality Inns ?

Just next door is Tortunga's Mexican and it is excellant. They have a full service bar. That is the closest. If you will go to google earth and click on tab at top that says find businesses, and search for bars or restaurants, it will show them. Some not too far....kind of depends on what you call walking distance. But don't forget taxis. BW will be more than happy to call one for you.

I'm comfortable walking along the Galveston main roads after dark.

The "normal" shopping - drugstores, grocery stores, WalMart, will be open until at least 10 pm; some will have further extended hours.

Stores on the Strand - the historic district/shopping area - are generally open Fri/Saturday until around 9, and close about 6 on weekdays.
