Rickey 88 Posted March 1, 2012 #2 Share Posted March 1, 2012 In your opinion, is the Gold Room a must see in the Hermitage? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So some, the Gold Room is a joy to view and a highlight of a Hermitage visit. To others, I have no doubt that they look upon it as nothing more than a pile of shining metal behind heavy glass. Only you can answer your own question. Anything others may or may not say won't make much difference!!
ianlin Posted March 2, 2012 #3 Share Posted March 2, 2012 I understand you have to pay an extra fee to see the Gold Room.
Giantfan13 Posted March 6, 2012 #4 Share Posted March 6, 2012 Your time in the Hermitage is valuable. Most tours do not spend more than between 2-3 hours in this amazing place and there is just so much to see and do there. Yes, in order to see the gold Room, there is an extra fee and you should check with whatever tour company you plan on using to see if them will even offer it to you. If you are part of a group, the rest of the group may not want to bother so it may not even be an option for you. Personally, I would by pass it in favor of seeing more of the other attractions in this marvelous place. Here are a few examples of what is to be seen in the Hermitage. There is so much more than just art One of the many ceiling murals that make each room so special http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe914.jpg There are special places for certain artworks http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe920.jpg One of the many tremendous rooms to view http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe927.jpg A world famous painting, Madonna and Child by Leonardo Da Vinci http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europemaster944.jpg Here is a short video of one of the rooms, that combines, art, with many unique items, along with magnificent tapestries http://s834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/?action=view¤t=europemaster1035.mp4 Just walking thru the hallways are amazing http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europemaster953.jpg Again, me personally would opt to forgo the Gold Room, in favor of other things Cheers Len
CintiPam Posted March 7, 2012 #5 Share Posted March 7, 2012 IMO, with limited time, no, particularly because with timed bookings, you will spend much time just going to and fro to make that time. With an entire day or two half days there, sure!:)

With an entire day or two half days there, sure!:) Agree. IMHO, there is SO much to see in the Hermitage in a very limited amount of time that you get only a "taste" of the treasures it houses. The Hermitage is a "must see" for visitors so it is also quite crowded (even with early entry). :( We plan on visiting SPB again in 2013 with a visa so that we can spend at least one entire day in the Hermitage and visit some of the other venues that our scant 2 days in port did not accomodate. We plan on seeing the Gold Room during this visit.
cruiselen Posted March 7, 2012 #7 Share Posted March 7, 2012 I absolutely agree with the above - the Gold Rooms will be a must-see in the Hermitage after you've been there quite a few times. Unless, of course, you have a specific interest in the exhibits there - the Scythian gold in one and the jewelry of the old Russian nobility in the other. JerseyJaguar Posted March 7, 2012 #8 Share Posted March 7, 2012 Do they display Fabrege Eggs at the Hermitage? I thought I read that an exhibit opened somewhere but not sure.
