Private Tour Guides using Viator

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any experience using the Viator Private Guide site to book guides?

Thinking about using for Tenerife, Lisbon, other ports in Spain.

Any info would be helpful.

Thanks. Will be on Crystal Symphony Lisbon to Barcelona March 29.

Viator is simply a middleman. I would cut them out and book directly with the guide as it will be less expensive. If you can't find what you are looking for in this forum, you may want to use tripadvisor.com. Go to the forum for your particular port and do a search for guides for your city, or ask if someone can make a recommendation.

We have used Alex at http://www.toptentours.eu for Lisbon with great results in the past. Highly enjoyable experience, using again this fall. You can book directly with Topten for whatever you want to do beforehand by email.

As the Rugrat's post, Viator is a booking agency.

Typically you will pay them about 10% more than booking direct (they also get a cut from the tour operator)

Viator make life easy by listing (fairly basic) details of a selection of tours from different operators, and you can feel more confident that if arrangements go belly-up you are dealing with that major international brand rather than an obscure & unknown operator who may not even have a decent grasp of english. Useful in some circumstances. I've used them just the once, they were very efficient & no problems.

But for tours in the Iberian peninsula you should be able to get suggestions, reviews, and recommendations such as pearleymae's without needing to use an intermediary.

Your vacation, your money, your choice.;)
