mrsfuzzmo Posted April 2, 2012 #1 Share Posted April 2, 2012 So, our cruise is in two weeks from today. We received our "important' notice today about a few things. One was that of the documentation that is needed to board. We have passports, so it does not worry us, but It's my understanding that many travel with govt. ID (Drivers license) and their BC. This notice sure looks like unless you are 16 or younger, you'd better have a passport. Am I reading this wrong? WHTI-COMPLIANT DOCUMENT REQUIREMENTS The U.S. Department of Homeland Security enforces secure document requirements. Only passports or Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI)-compliant documents are accepted to embark your cruise. U.S. and Canadian passport holders must present one of the following valid documents: Passport Book (RECOMMENDED); U.S. Passport Card; U.S. or Canadian issued Enhanced Driver's License (EDL); U.S. or Canadian issued "Non-Driver" Identification Card; NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST Card. For information regarding WHTI compliant documents, visit http://www.getyouhome.gov. U.S. citizens ages 16 and above may present a Certified Birth Certificate together with valid photo identification. U.S. and Canadian citizens aged 15 years and younger may sail with a Birth Certificate. U.S. Permanent Residents must present a valid Permanent Resident Card. Canadian Permanent Residents must present a valid passport and Permanent Resident Card.

mrsfuzzmo Posted April 2, 2012 Author #3 Share Posted April 2, 2012 Ahh, I read that wrong. I read it as 16 and below. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks for pointing out the fact that my glasses were on my coffee table and not on my face. :)

Only if the cruise is a closed-loop voyage, originating in a US port and ending in that same port, is it possible for US citizens over 16 to sail with just a Birth Certificate and a valid photo (government) ID (ie. cruises to Hawaii from LA, cruises to Mexico from LA, cruises to Alaska from Seattle and San Francisco, cruises to the Caribbean from Fort Lauderdale, you get the idea). There are a few exceptions...
slomotion Posted April 2, 2012 #6 Share Posted April 2, 2012 The section I highlighted says you can with valid photo ID and certified BC. Note the word "Certified" Depending on the location of birth (which state) you might not have a "certified" birth certificate. You would have to get one. It also depends on your age. Many of us (seniors) were born prior to the issuance of "certified" birth certificates and do not have them. You can get one for a small fee. slomo
