LA Hotel pre flight to NZ

Hope someone can help me. We will be taking a NZ cruise in 2013 and would like to break up the flight from NY with a stop in LA before the long haul flight. I am looking for a recommendation as to where in LA we should spend 2 nights (along with a hotel in the area). Have never been there before so would like to see a few sights or perhaps utilize the HOHO bus. Any suggestions?

We stay at the Hilton Garden Inn near LAX. Free shuttle. It is amazing what a good rest and a few good meals can do to improve a long trans-Pac flight.

 

When I've treid to just keep flying and not do a stay over in the LAX area, it has taken me a long time to feel better after arriving.
