golfb4cruzing Posted April 7, 2012 #1 Share Posted April 7, 2012 I was looking at our pics from cruise and notice a large "sludge pond" between the beach and the other side of the island. I took the pic from our port balcony when we were docked. Does anyone know what is creating it?

jollyjones Posted April 8, 2012 #6 Share Posted April 8, 2012 It is Hawkes Nest Salina. From Wikimapia: "Hawkes Nest Salina is the southernmost body of water on Grand Turk in the Turks and Caicos Islands. A salina, or salt pond, it is a reminder of the island's past, when harvesting of salt was its chief industry. Hawkes Nest Salina is northeast of the Grand Turk Cruise Terminal, and north of White Sands Beach. The Hawks Nest Anchorage is located in the waters off the coast to the south." Daisyloo Posted April 8, 2012 #7 Share Posted April 8, 2012 Definitely a salt pond. We saw it on our island tour of Grand Turk 2 years ago. Leftover from the old salt trade days.

Daisyloo Posted April 8, 2012 #9 Share Posted April 8, 2012 There are also salt ponds on Bonaire that are still in use today. Actually it seems to be a major industry on Bonaire. The salt ponds there are huge, and are different colours depending on how much of the water has evaporated. Some are a blue shade and some are quite pink. It was cool to see, as well as seeing the huge piles of salt ready to be shipped. They looked like huge white pyramids shining in the distance. Very pretty. 5326jan Posted April 9, 2012 #10 Share Posted April 9, 2012 We were there a couple weeks ago and rented a jeep. There are a large number of salt ponds and some actually still look like they are in use. There were some large ponds at the opposite side of the island that smelled terrible! Others didn't smell bad. All in all, I'd say other than the beaches, Grand Turk doesn't have a lot to offer. We drove by "downtown" twice before we realized we were "downtown".
