Cruising89143 Posted April 13, 2012 #26 Share Posted April 13, 2012 It seems to vary by port. In Miami, we handed the porter $10 for our 4 bags. He told us with a straight face that "the standard rate is $10 per bag. You know sometimes things happen to bags destined for ships." Felt very much like extortion to me. I wondered what would have happened had we just walked away? Sunken suitcases, loaded on the wrong ship, what? I would have taken his name and made a few phone calls when I returned home. That is total BS on the porters part.
endymion6942 Posted April 13, 2012 #27 Share Posted April 13, 2012 $1-2 per bag is the accpted amount.....depending on weight!!! $2 for heavy bags! That is exactly what I do.
skatergirl Posted April 20, 2012 #28 Share Posted April 20, 2012 Thanks for the advice about tipping. Took the Jewel of the Seas from Harwich and when we got into the car park we had to load our cases onto a trolley with all the other cases and then catch the shuttle bus to embarkation. We did not see our cases again until we found them outside our cabin door. In Majorca we just left our cases with all the others on the dock and they turned up outside our door. We are sailing on the Freedom from Fort Lauderdale in December, will someone actually come and take our bags from us? There will be 5 of us so how much should we tip? We Brits are not used to tipping.
karena1 Posted April 20, 2012 #29 Share Posted April 20, 2012 We normally tip $5 for a 3 night cruise and $10 for a 7 night cruise. I know you don't have to, but I would never think not to give them a tip, just the way we are.
dachshunddoglover Posted April 20, 2012 #30 Share Posted April 20, 2012 We tip $2. per bag and usually wrap it around a candy bar if it's cool or a candy that won't melt if it's hot. They smile and seem to like it. Never lost a bag in 27 sailings. (knocking on wood now :D). E-Beth
Lorey2007 Posted April 21, 2012 #31 Share Posted April 21, 2012 All of the porters that have helped us have treated us like Angelina and Brad:D or Will and Kate so we always over tip them they work so hard.
