Glaciers from Olden

Can anyone give advice as to which of the glaciers is best to visit? The following is the choice of three tours. Thanks.

BRIKSDAL GLACIER BY TROLL CAR

An opportunity to come face to face with the crowning glory of this scenic landscape –the beautiful Briksdal Glacier.

Travel by coach through the beautiful Olden Valley with its majestic mountains, glacier tongues, waterfalls and the green Olden Lake. On arrival at the Briksdal Inn, you will board your troll cars which will take you part of the way to the Briksdal Glacier.

KJENNDALEN GLACIER & LOVATNET LAKE

Enjoy a combination of dramatic scenery, the Kjenndalen Glacier and a leisurely lake cruise.

On arrival in the Kjenndalen Valley, a ten minute walk will take you to a viewpoint to see the Kjenndalen Glacier.

OLDEVATNET LAKE CRUISE

Enjoy a cruise on one of Norway’s beautiful lakes & get a glimpse of the mighty ice fields of the Jostedals Glacier.

Enjoy a leisurely cruise on the long and narrow Oldevatnet Lake, one of Norway’s most beautiful. Admire the long, white tongue of the Melkevoll Glacier and the arms of the spectacular Jostedalsbreen Glacier, including the Myklebustbreen Glacier.

All of the glaciers are arms of Jostedalsbreen, the largest glacier in continental Europe (still much smaller than the glaciers in Alaska, the Arctic, or the Antarctic).

Briksdalsbreen (Briksdal Glacier) is the most accessible, so you would be able to get closest to the glacier itself, but you can't walk on Briksdalsbreen these days. (There are companies that offer guided glacier walks on the nearby Bødalsbreen glacier arm.) Here's a link to some general information about the glacier, including a picture of the "troll cars."

Here is some similar information about Kjenndalsbreen (Kjenndalen Glacier) and Lovatnet.

I would guess that the Oldevatnet cruise would be focused more on the general lake scenery with less opportunity to view the glaciers, based on the photos from one of the excursion companies.

Thank you very much for all the information. It is very helpful.

I think we will most probably do the tour to the Briksdal Glacier with the troll cars.

The troll cars will drop you off at the entrance to the National Park. It is not possible to see the Glacier from this point, however, there is a good view of it on the way up and a walk of approximately 550 yards will provide a closer look. There will be time to admire the Glacier and photograph it.

Here are my pictures from Celebrity's version of the Kjenndalen Glacier and Lovatnet lake boat ride. It was about 10% bus ride, 50% boat ride, 20% waffles at a cafe, and 20% walk/visit at the base of the glacier. Hopefully this helps you better understand that option at least. The pictures are a little out of sequence it seems, but you'll get the idea.

Does anyone know the price of the Fjord1 tourist bus from Olden to Briksdalen Mt Lodge, have found this years timetable from May onward. But, can't seem to find a price.

I don't know the price of the Fjord1 bus to Briksdalen, but the price with Shore Excursions Norway on their tour OLDBriksdalen is 290NOK per person, around 51USD.
