Carnival Valor... Smoking at Lido Deck Bar (Deck 9)?

sometimes I have a hard time getting a straight answer or answer at all from Carnival... I'm interested in booking the Carnival Valor in Jan 2013... so I called Carnival to verify that smoking will still be an option at the lido deck bar (Deck 9)... I was transferred at least 5 times with a total of 1.5 hrs on the phone with no answer... by the sixth time they wanted to transfer me I said forget it and hung up... I know that the 2.0 upgrades are suppose to be done on the Valor in 2014... my concern is that I also know the Freedom is to have its upgrades in 2014 as well but somebody posted somewhere that you can't smoke on the lido deck, was this person confused... if the 2.0 upgrade hasn't been done yet why can't you smoke on the lido deck... this is my concern with the Valor

Has anybody been on the Valor lately... did you notice if smoking was allowed at the Lido Deck Bar?

Any help would be appreciated :)

Smoking is still permitted on one side of the Lido deck public area's UNTIL the ship undergoes the 2.0 upgrades and then there is no smoking on the Lido deck at all.

They have provided more comfortable seating up on deck 10 and there has been some talk that they might add umbrella's so you can at least be out of the sun while smoking.

If you were to ask someone at Carnival who is normally making reservations, many of them have never been on a cruise. Some only once. They don't know what Cruise Critic is and wouldn't know answers to questions as specific as that.

Ask here, not at Carnival!

But even when I ask here in this forum I can't seem to get a straight answer... some comments are saying yes to smoking on one side of Lido Deck which I already know is where the Lido Deck Bar is and some are saying no... so I still don't have a concrete answer... this can be frustrating when smoking is a factor to which ship we will sail on... oh well, looks like we will just have to book it and see for ourselves... might be the last cruise for us :-(

I hear you, some of us rely on Lido, not only for smoking, but for socializing. We don't always sail with our own private "group".

I was booked on Liberty last year, the Carnival rep said "of course there is smoking on Lido". There was NOT. The ship had just gone through 2.0 and Guys was there. From my understanding, smoking remains as long as 2.0 is not in place.I wonder what will happen on Dream, they will be upgraded, but not with a Guy burger place. It was my understanding it was the culprit on Liberty after too many complained about too much smoke when they went to the condiment table.

that's to bad you got the wrong info for the Liberty... I on the other hand new it had went into dry dock hence the reason we booked on the Glory for our Jan 2012 cruise... now since the Glory is going into dry dock Nov 2012 we won't sail on her again... so that only leaves the Valor and Freedom I believe who dry dock in 2014... so I won't be sailing at all soon which makes me sad... and a balcony is out of the question cuz we could never afford it... and I have no plans on going up to deck 10 all the way forward each time I or my hubby want to have a cig... that's no vaca!

The bummer with Liberty was..When smoking was announced to be banned in staterooms, it was announced, and refunds were available because of it. Once 2.0 was there, smoking was initially allowed as previous. That lasted one week!! Smoking was immediately cut off due to complaints. I called Carnival, NO REFUND even though it was an UNEXPECTED ban. I was pissed to say the least. I got on the ship (no refund) and the new smoking area consisted of 8 chairs on deck 10 with no cover at all. I must say how fun it was in the sun, wind, rain, no tables, most of the time no ashtrays. If it was rainy or too windy, the chairs were put away.

So, non smokers complain about increased casino smoking, well, we had to go somewhere in inclimate weather. Non smokers got their wish on Lido, but created a new set of problems with the casino.

OK so how about this.....

You and hubby stop smoking while not cruising, the money you save goes towards a balcony room, then while on cruise you smoke on the balcony during your vaca! That’s a win win in my book!:D

We are sailing the Miracle in Sept., I was told when I booked (about a month ago) that smoking was allowed on one side of the ship - now I'm not sure I was given correct info. - anyone have accurate/first hand information regarding smoking on the Miracle?

I think it's only Liberty that banned Lido. We were told we could smoke on deck 3 (or whatever)

From what I understand smoking is still allowed on the Lido Deck Starboard side as long as you are not on the Serenity Deck - which is non-smoking on all the ships.

I am sailing the Miracle on 5/30 and I am a smoker so I will gladly try and remember to report back to this thread after I return as to where smoking is allowed. I am going to be sharing an inside cabin with a friend who is a non-smoker. We had considered a balcony cabin - where I knew I could smoke on the balcony - but I did a little research on where smoking was allowed and we decided to save the money on the cabin and spend it elsewhere.

I actually sailed with the same friend on the Valor last May in an inside cabin and I had no problems so I am hoping it is the same this year. Last year on the Valor I did smoke on the Lido Deck during the day. I did spend much of my cruise on the Serenity Deck so this meant taking an actual smoke break and walking downstairs to the Main Lido area for a cigarette since there is no smoking on Serenity. I did not mind at all. In the morning I would go to the Lido Deck for coffee and a cigarette. At night when I was out and about and enjoying the entertainment I would have to sometimes excuse myself and go into one of the lounges where you can smoke. On the plus side I had bought the cheap cartons (cigs are between 8.50 and 9.00 per pack where I live) on board and came home with more than I thought I would!

To the Miracle cruiser - I am planning on writing a review when I return but if it gets to about June 10th (I debark on the 7th and may need a couple of days!!) post back on this thread since I now have it bookmarked or start a new thread with Miracle and Smoking in the title and I will be sure to answer!

To LizaMM -

Thank you so much for your reply, I really appreciate the info. Both my husband and I are smokers, and as such, it does make a difference in the planning of a vacation! We have been on NCL several times, and smoking is allowed on one side of the Lido, which made it convenient. We enjoy getting up early, before the kids and most passengers and enjoy quiet time, coffee and smokes before it gets crowded. We do spend most of our time around the pool, more people watching and entertainment there; we are considerate of others and only smoke in designated areas, but hate the idea of having to get up and go somewhere everytime we want a cigarette. Also considering a balcony so am watching for price drops. Enjoy your cruise, I'm envious it is so soon! (BTW, we live in CT too!)

Think how much money you could save if you didn't smoke....you could probably afford a suite....

I was on The Valor a month ago. From what I saw they did still allow smoking on one side of Lido (don't remember if it was port or starboard). However, that doesn not necessarily mean it will be at the Lido Bar. It seemed it was on one side at some tables in a certain area.

Was on the April 28 sailing on the Valor and did see smoking at the Lido bar but think is was restriceted to the right hand side. The waiters placed and picked up their orders on the left hand side. I sat at the tables and only at the bar long enough to order a drink so this was an observation, not something I was told.

I was also on the Liberty the end of Janruary just after the ban of smoking on Lido deck. I was not happy about that either. The area they selected, as mentioned, on deck 10 was not adequate. There were a few chairs and during busy periods these were "saved" for somone that was not yet with their party. There was no cover from the elements.

When the area cleared for any length of time, they would also take the ash trays so you would have to go back to deck 9, secure an ash tray from the bar, (were smoking is not allowed), and go back up to deck 10.

Don't misunderstand me, I didn't mind the excercise. The problem was i saw too many people standing at the railing where they had the ash trays that are fixed to the hand rails. On two seperate occaisions I saw passengers flick their butts over the railing. That is a disaster waithing to happen.

Though not enough to ruin a cruise, it wasn't convienient, and being segregated to deck 10 you felt left out of the activity going on below.

I did enjoy the 2.0 upgrades. The burgers and burrito bar were excellent. I would sail Liberty again, but since have sailed Valor and have the Legend booked in October, so obviously, Liberty was not my favorite ship. Perhaps it would have been had smoking not been so inconvienient.

We have Cruised 23 times and at this point it is still our favorite form of vacation. I do see the writing on the wall though and see AI's in our future if the restrictions continue.

I promised you an update on the Miracle - I just got off her this morning....I will be writing a full review with photos at some point but here is the latest on smoking on the Miracle.......

Starboard side of the ship on the Lido Deck outside. Only exception is the Serenity Deck which is in the aft. There is no smoking here at all. However, you can walk up the stairs to Deck 10 and smoke. There is one of those big mounted ashtrays up there.

You can also smoke on the outer area of Deck 3 Starboard side.

Note that on embarkation Day there was no smoking allowed outdoors at all until after the Muster Drill

Indoor locations are one area of Mr. Lucky's Bar which is in the Casino; Frankie & Johnny's Lounge and the upper level of Frankensteins Lab (disco). All of these are located on Deck 2

That was also my experience. The chairs were taken away by others moving them to be with their party or removed if there was a bit of wind or rain and there were never any ashtrays. I think we found the chairs, a table and an ashtray ONCE up there in 7 days - and that was on a port day. No cover, the deck chairs block the along the rail ashtrays, and it's the windiest place on the ship. I saw more than one idiot look around for an ashtray, then toss the butt overboard. Really not a good plan on Carnival's part.

Thank you for remembering to respond! That was so nice of you. I hope you had a fabulous trip and can't wait to read your review!

This was very useful information - we actually just upgraded to a balcony (guarenteed? Makes me a bit nervous) so that we could relax and have a smoke on the balcony without breaking any rules. We've never had a balcony before and am anxious to see if we use it as much as I think/hope we will. Normally we like to be on the Lido people watching.

I am surprised at the no smoking policy before the Muster - seems like an odd policy. How about on your balcony during that time? Guess we won't be in a great rush to get there early this time.

Looking forward to your review, thanks again!!!
