shiralex Posted May 19, 2012 #1 Share Posted May 19, 2012 Going on the Carnival Pride on June 24th. The ports are Port Canaveral, Nassau and Freeport. We don't really want to spend big bucks on excursions, maybe just to do stuff on our own. Any suggestions?
golfadj Posted May 19, 2012 #2 Share Posted May 19, 2012 Nassau can go take a walk. If you are ok with walking can walk to Atlantis hotel. Freeport nothing to do by pier. Go to port of call pages for more ideas.
glorialagos Posted May 19, 2012 #3 Share Posted May 19, 2012 We rarely pay for excursions. Port Canaveral - stay on the ship and enjoy the emptiness! Nassau - take the ferry over to visit Atlantis, walk around where you can, check it out and then head to the public beach (Cabbage I believe if I am thinking of the correct place). Freeport - take a van to the shopping place and beach - shop, hang out, visit the casino. That beach was really fun to explore early before many people got there. I hope you have visited the port boards. You will get more details there. I am just going by memory and may even have mixed up Nassau with Freeport. You can take your own snorkel stuff and just try some snorkeling off the beaches - maybe will see something, maybe not.
GradUT Posted May 19, 2012 #4 Share Posted May 19, 2012 Here's the link to information on free walking tours that I found here on Cruise Critic. We are going to Nassau next week and plan to do a walking tour in the morning followed by an afternoon on Junkanoo Beach, which is free. I downloaded the tour by www dot brentje followed by an s dot com slash Nassau and it looks great. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1579041&highlight=walking+tour+nassau
matj2000 Posted May 19, 2012 #5 Share Posted May 19, 2012 You don't need to do anything. We have hardly ever done those package shore excursions. Sometimes we just go into the town & hang out. Sometimes we go to the beach/ beach club. Sometimes we rent a car & drive. To me, those group excursions are a waste...

Bunkie103 Posted May 20, 2012 #7 Share Posted May 20, 2012 Definitely walk in Nassau. If you do a yahoo search there is an on line walking tour. You can hit the Queens Staircase, Fort Fincastle and then do some shopping or looking downtown.
GradUT Posted May 27, 2012 #8 Share Posted May 27, 2012 We just got back from our Bahamas tour. We did the walking tour by "brentje followed by an s" that I referenced and it was excellent. Be sure to stop in the public library that was once a jail. The staff there is very friendly and it's an interesting place. Take the stairs to the top for a view of the city. The walking tour does not indicate that there is a fee to enter Fort Fincastle and it's not signposted at all there. When we were informed that we had to pay to enter, we decided not to go inside, so I don't know how much they charge. Our plan was for a "free" day in Nassau and I've been in plenty of old forts already. The map shows that you can walk through the grounds of Government House, but you really are not supposed to. The guard stopped us and when I showed him the map and where we wanted to go, he allowed us to pass through but said we had to stay within the marked borders of the road--no wandering around. You will actually get a better view of Government House from the road below.
BeagleOne Posted May 27, 2012 #9 Share Posted May 27, 2012 If you have any interest at all in the space program, Kennedy Space Center is well worth a visit. The then and now tour, which goes to many of the Mercury Project sites, is really good.
shiralex Posted May 27, 2012 Author #10 Share Posted May 27, 2012 Thanks...we want to go to the space center too but don't want to pay the excursion price. We were thinking of getting a taxi and paying for the tickets on our own which are half the price of the excursion. Any one else do this?
Ksea1961 Posted May 27, 2012 #11 Share Posted May 27, 2012 We got off the Pride recently. In Port Canaveral we took a taxi to Cocoa beach. ($5 pp each way). The big buses are about $17 pp each way. The taxies are fine and very reliable. Once in Cocoa Beach we used the trolley to get around ($1.25 pp per ride). We went to the pier, Ron Jons and sat on the beach. In Nassau we bought day passes to the British Colonial Hilton for $50 pp which includes $30 worth of food and/or drink pp...use of pool, beach, loungers and they lend you a beach towel. We walked there from the ship. In Freeport there is some shopping right outside the ship. Really cute stores and some food and drink places. We took a taxi to Lucaya ($5 pp each way) and did some shopping and then walked to the beach. Right on the beach there is a food/drink establishment. We sat in there, but a waiter never came by. I guess you need to go to the bar.
cb at sea Posted May 27, 2012 #12 Share Posted May 27, 2012 Get a guidebook on the ports you'll visit...it's the best way to get the most from your time ashore! Libraries have them at no charge to you! We hardly ever pay for excursions!!!!

Our favorite thing to do in Nassau is...... stay on the ship! :D It's nice having the place "to yourselves" :)
wrigley80 Posted May 27, 2012 #14 Share Posted May 27, 2012 Junkanoo Beach is a short walk from the ship or you can get on the #10 Jitney bus. Junkanoo Beach is a free beach and it is a beautiful beach where you can get some great pics of the ships that are in port for the day
