Cuchina Del Capitano - Magic - Reservations Needed?

Recommended Posts

I saw on John Heald's blog a few days ago that you can make dinner reservations for the Cuchina del Capitano (pay Italian restaurant) before you sail.

I would like to eat there one night during our cruise, but I figured I'd just make reservations while on board. Anyone who has recently sailed on Magic -- was it really necessary to book this in advance?

I've eaten in the steakhouse four times in our three previous cruises, and it was never full, so I figured that would be the case here too. (We tend to eat dinner late-ish so that may be why they haven't been full.)

The restaurant tends to get and stay busy. I really enjoyed it and the portions are large. Also, there's very limited seating so if you really want to go, either way, make a reservation.

Is is true that you only pay at dinner time?

Yes, during lunch your can order different pastas. At dinner the menu is more extensive.

I guess it depends on the night you go. When we went in Feb. it was almost empty.

You're absolutely right.Timing is everything:)

I was on the Magic last week and made reservations on the ship. It was announced every day to book dinner with them so it seemed they certainly weren't booked up.

Definitely eat there, we all agreed it was the best dinner we had on the ship. Lunch also was good. For lunch you are given the choice of what kind of pasta, what sauce, and what toppings you want. The waiter then goes to the buffet table and prepares it for you.

Is the lunch a sit-down or is it buffet style? Really looking forward to trying it on the Breeze!

Lunch is sit-down. You fill out an order slip listing the type of pasta you want, which kind of sauce, and what other ingredients (shrimp, chicken, sausage, vegetables, etc.) They bring it to you 10-15 minutes later. I highly recommend at least one lunch there during the cruise. No reservations needed at lunch--it's first come first serve but we never had to wait very long. Nancy

We ate dinner there twice on a 7 day cruise and made reservations a day ahead. If you really want to eat at a particular time I'd recommend reserving before the cruise or at least a couple of days before the day you want to eat there. Nancy

No reservation needed. You can just walk up and they will seat you.

We waited until late in the week to make reservations and then they were all booked up, but the Casino host comped us our meals on Friday.

The fee is $12

we did make reservations both times we went. But not sure if you HAVE to. When we waiting in line for our table several couples walked up and were seated without reservations.

This is an excellent restaurant. The wine girl sings to you upon arriving at your table and pushes a large barrel of wine. They also have a sing along. We completely enjoyed our dinners there.

I had the Steak one night and the Short Ribs the other... Of the two, the Short RIbs were the BEST....Also, I LOVED the Lemon Sorbetto with white chocolate and hazelnut sauce at the bottom of the dish.. Yummy!!!

I was just on the Magic last week as well and we made reservations once we were on the ship and had no issues. For $12/person it was one of the best meals we ate during the cruise. I had the spaghetti carbonara and it was outstanding. I also had a glass of the specialty wine that was being offered out of the barrel (can't remember the name but you can only get it in the restaurant) and it was very good as well. I would highly recommend to anyone that is interested.

We did eat there for lunch one day also. Again it was very good and nice that it was free during the day.

I was also on the Magic last week. Personally, I thought the food was sub-par at best.

That's too bad, but maybe it mimics my experience. I ordered the Pasta Carbonara and while I wouldn't call it subpar, I didn't think it had as much flavor as the dish served in the MDR.

Perhaps it was just that night, because others have raved about it. I don't remember what my sister had but she thought it was very very good.

Is it adult only like the steakhouse or could we bring our teens???

Well, you are allowed to bring your kids to the steakhouse, although I think the general consensus here is that most younger kids would have trouble sitting through a 2.5 hour meal.

I don't believe there are any limits on age in the Italian restaurant so @luvdisney, your 9 year old would be fine. (Of course anyone who has a toddler or infant who starts howling during a meal should take them outside or risk getting the evil eye from the other patrons.)

Good question! We have a DS 9 (by then) that will be with us.

when it first rolled out the adults were $10. now $12. the childrens menu was $5. not sure if that changed. Also not sure if they need to order from it, probably not.
