beachbabie393 Posted June 5, 2012 #1 Share Posted June 5, 2012 Is it possible to go to Maya Key on your own, not through Carnival or other cruise ships? If so, can anyone let me know how we should go about doing this. We are docking at Mahogany Bay. I know many threads talk about Maya Key, but I haven't seen one on whether or not we can go alone. Thanks in advance!
lexanna02 Posted June 5, 2012 #2 Share Posted June 5, 2012 According to http://www.mayakeyroatan.com: Direct bookings are not available, as space is limited and our capacity is reserved for the cruise excursions. I hope this helps!

Rare crewsweeper Posted June 5, 2012 #4 Share Posted June 5, 2012 Monopoly why screw up a good thing! Back when only Coxen Hole had a pier for cruise ships and Maya Key was Fin and Flippers, it was easy enough for you to walk over to the water taxi dock and take a quick water taxi to F&F. But traffic was very small and typically there were few guests. The place was starting to show wear and tear. When Mahogany Bay CC was built that reduced the non-reservation traffic considerably. The resort was sold to the folks who own Anthony's Key Resort in Sandy Bay, a beautiful resort designed for longer staying visitors. They undertook to improve the facilities and add attractions. Being business minded, they understood their market needed to attract the two ship loads of cruisers docking in Mahogany Bay and could not rely on the less frequent dockings of single cruise ships in Coxen Hole. So they contracted with all the cruise lines to offer the site as exclusive excursions. That just makes good business sense given the market in Roatan. Unfortunately contracts with cruise lines do carry stipulations that individuals from cruise ships can't also book with the resort. That's a common business clause throughout the Caribbean, works for some doesn't work for others. A monopoly, however, it is not.

I know when I first started researching a place to go, this place came up a lot. I found people that had booked on their own and others that went by cruise ship (more recently). When trying to locate this place on TripAdvisor, I stumbled across their previous name F&F and discovered that the only way to book this place was using your cruise ship. It helps to put things in to perspective with an explanation for it. Thanks! :)
