emen822 Posted June 19, 2012 #1 Share Posted June 19, 2012 I'm leaving on the Explorer in 11 days to Bermuda. :D This is the first time being on a ship that stays in port overnight. Are you able to come and go as you please? I hear the beaches are amazing. Is it worth it to go to two different beaches on those days? I have printed out some stuff about Bermuda as this is my first trip there and really have to take the time to get ideas together since I am clueless about this island. Would love to hear some ideas of what people did on the island other than the beach (although I'm happy to do two different beaches each day). :) As far as the ship, does anyone know if they have Moscato at any of the bars? Or if they sell the "beer cooler"? Thanks for your help! :D Mary

Go to Horseshoe Bay. Check out the north end, lots of different beaches and coves, enough there for the whole day. I have pictures of this in my review, linked in my sig. jkshu80 Posted June 19, 2012 #6 Share Posted June 19, 2012 The crystal caves are beautiful....it's something to do other than the beach and the caves are really cool so it's a little break from the heat!
hawks026 Posted June 19, 2012 #7 Share Posted June 19, 2012 Horseshoe Bay and Elbow Beach are both really nice; we did go to the beach area at the Dockyard one day when we were there and weren't very impressed. It was very small and the sand was kind of rough. The Frog & Onion pub at the Dockyard is great, they have delicious drinks and during happy hour they have a piano player, in addition to drink specials. Other than the beaches, St. George's is pretty cool to visit; very historical and nice to walk around. We also took the ferry and walked around Hamilton and went to Flanagan's Irish Pub, which has a balcony overlooking the harbour. We had delicious rum swizzles there, although I know many people suggest going to the Swizzle Inn to get one; we didn't have enough time. Enjoy your trip!! JJSMaine Posted June 19, 2012 #8 Share Posted June 19, 2012 There are nasty little pricker devils that WILL cause you no end of discomfort... when walking to and from the beaches make sure your feet are not exposed... ouchy wowza!.. for such little buggers they are persistent.... Do not pass up being on the island at night... the sounds and the atmosphere are so different... and the tree frogs that never stop... :)

Wonder if it's something that's only out a certain time of the year? All our cruises there, except one, have been in Oct. Emen882, Lots of Bermuda info on the Bermuda Ports of Call board. jerseybeachmom Posted June 20, 2012 #12 Share Posted June 20, 2012 We were in Bermuda overnight 2 years ago. We spent our first day at Horseshoe Bay and then took the bus into Hamilton, which we would not do again, as it was myself and 3 teenage kids traveling, and Hamilton was much to expensive for us. Nothing a teenager can afford in Hamilton. The second day, we planned to get up early and go to Elbow beach, but the second day was a Sunday, and the buses didn't start until 10am. We went to Elbow Beach anyway, were able to rent some second rate chairs and umbrella, but nearest place to eat was a very expensive resort. (salads started at $24) We elected to starve and wait until we got back on the ship to eat. This year we have 1 day in Bermuda and plan to spend at Horseshoe bay. We will pack fruit from the ship as a snack, and they have a snack stand at the beach to buy burgers and soda,as well as rent chairs and umbrellas. Bermuda has some of the most beautiful beaches on earth, so my reccomendation is to enjoy them. You can shop at designer stores in any major city, so don't take time away from the beach to do that here.
bighairtexan Posted June 20, 2012 #13 Share Posted June 20, 2012 This is from Bermuda online dot org: Owners of arriving animals, plants, flowers, fruits, shellfish and products and vegetables must have proper documentation approved earlier by the Bermuda Government's Department of the Environment. You can, however, take sealed prepackaged snacks like peanuts, crackers, granola bars, etc. There are lots of snack options.:)

It is against the agricultural laws of Bermuda to bring fresh foods off the ship. You could be heavily fined. Packaged foods are OK - bring granola bars, boxes of cereal, etc.
family cruisers Posted June 20, 2012 #16 Share Posted June 20, 2012 Sandals don't always protect you either, as I found out. OUCH is right. emen822 Posted June 20, 2012 Author #18 Share Posted June 20, 2012 Thank you for all your ideas/suggestions. I was also wondering about what to do at night. I would love to get off the ship after dinner and head to a bar for a drink. Are there places right there where we are docked? Safe? We wouldn't want to wander off too far and would rather do something within walking distance instead of taxi/bus, etc.
davy jones Posted June 20, 2012 #19 Share Posted June 20, 2012 As others have said, take a look at the Bermuda board here. Lots of good advice there. Bermuda is beautiful and the people are very friendly, but it is British than Caribbean laid back. When in Bermuda, think of the ship as your hotel (with meals and entertainment included). You can come and go as you please. Horseshoe Bay and Elbow Beach are the most popular beaches. You take the number 7 bus from the Dockyard to either of them. Horseshoe is closer to the ship. If you are in the St. George area, Tobacco Bay beach is popular. I personally would not do two beaches in a day because of travel time. There are plenty of things to do. The caves are nice, you can take in historical sites in St. George, Hamilton, or the Dockyard. The best way to get to St. George or Hamilton is the ferry. You can also take the bus or taxi. The bus is nice, but takes longer. Shopping is expensive. There are few T-shirt and cheap souviner shops.

karinad Posted June 21, 2012 #21 Share Posted June 21, 2012 We're on the EOS in Oct. for Bermuda. I think the ship is docked for 3 days. Does this mean that none of the ships stores, casinos, etc. remain closed while docked? Bars??? I was never on a ship that stayed docked overnight. This is new to me. karinad Posted June 21, 2012 #24 Share Posted June 21, 2012 Thanks! I knew that the stores and casinos would normally be closed while in port, but wasn't sure about the bars. RCCL must lose a few dollars with being docked for 3 days.
