We sailed the Solstice after sailing on both Royal and Princess. We found Celebrity to be a little more up scale than both, but not stuffy...champaign upon boarding, cold towels and water upon re-boarding after a port stop, etc. Also, the crew and officers we encountered actually made us feel that they were happy we chose to sail with them.

Enjoy your cruise!

Agree with comments by 2flacruisers. Below are a few of my visuals to make the point on the classy, upscale design and touches that we experienced and loved on the Solstice last summer. Definitely a step UP from some of the more "mass" lines. From my live/blog below, you can see many more details and pictures on the food, entertainment, facilities, etc., on this well-designed Solstice-type ships. These pictures might give you a better sampling for how things are done, look on these ships.

Did a June 7-19, 2011, Solstice cruise from Barcelona that had stops in Villefranche, ports near Pisa and Rome, Naples, Kotor, Venice and Dubrovnik. Enjoyed great weather and a wonderful trip. Dozens of wonderful visuals with key highlights, tips, comments, etc., on these postings. We are now at 90,782 views for this live/blog re-cap on our first sailing with Celebrity and much on wonderful Barcelona. Check these postings and added info at:

The Solarium was one of our favorite areas on the Solstice. Food and drinks were nearby and it was very relaxed and sophisticated. Quieter, too, as it is an adults-only area. Two hot tubs here. Not crowded, especially in the evenings. Nice art and design are there as a part of this sparkling ship facility.:

On the top, back of the Solstice, here is a wider view of Corning Hot Glass show area, plus the green grass and the unique covering designs for this special area of the ship.:

For entertainment in the Solstice Theatre, it was called “Solstice -- The Show” featuring a European-style dance, air acts, music, etc. Very dramatic and interesting as they swing, twirl and soar over the audience and stage. It is a “state-of-the-art” theatre with these "Cirque-type" dancers being able to “do their thing”. Here is one example of the “air show” put on by the show performers.:

Super loved it when there were times at the pool in the afternoons on the Solstice last June when the “party band” was going at it with great tunes. This added to the fun and excitement around the pool area of our ship. Just like done by some famous California pop groups, we were hearing “fun, fun, fun” underneath the sun!!:

This is a view of the library area on the tenth floor that overlooked the central, open core area of the ship. Not a great book selection here, but it is a nice-looking area with a quiet reading hideaway.:

In the top, back area near the Sunset Bar with live grass, some enjoy this area by reading, playing on the lawn or sun-bathing there. Usually, it’s not too crowded!:

We think that X has a somewhat classier feel then RCI, attracts fewer kids, has better cuisine, and the Solstice Class ships have a near-perfect layout. On the other hand, RCI does seem to have better entertainment and more activity options.

Thank you so much for that Hank I found that really helpful. We are taking our first cruise on X in September on Century to Alaska We have cruised quite a few times with RCI, NCL, P&O and are really looking forward to Sept. We took a short cruise in May with MSC and have to say we wont be going with them again

We found X to be a bit more stylishly done than RCI, a bit more polished. The food was way better, some of the shows were as good as RCI but overall RCI did win out there. X is not as family orientated as RCI, not as many features, but still plenty to do, just more along the lecture, show type activity.
