marine life and views while leaving port nyc and bermuda???

When we left out of tampa last year we saw the beautiful sight of the dolphins playing along side of the ship. We never knew to go up front to see this when leaving other ports and just usually sat pool side with a bucket of beers. But we really enjoy wildlife and seeing such beautiful creatures in their natural habitat. I know NYC you really can't see anything in the water but the statue of liberty is a beautiful sight and we go under a bridge as well right?? Any other suggestions on what to look for while going out of NYC? What have others seen going out of Bermuda? Has anyone seen dolphins going out of that port?

We live just south of NYC and have tons of dolphins in the water, so don't discount seeing them along the way. Our dolphins usually hang closer to shore, about 100 yards off the beach, but I see them all the time about 2 hours offshore as well, so keep an eye out! Can't help you with Bermuda, sorry!

Hi there,

We're on your sailing..

We've done this route the past 6 or 7 years in a row.

NYC we'll be docked next to the Intrepid that now houses our Space Shuttle!

We pass the Empire state building, you'll see the FREEDOM TOWER, we do go under the Verrazano bridge. We usually see the staten island ferry go by. Don't forget the Jersey City side (to the right) and Liberty Park, The Colgate clock etc...Make sure to be up on the way back to NYC. It is spectacular seeing it as the sun begins to rise. I do it every year as if its the first time. Just beautiful.

See you on the STAR!

We have never seen any marine life out of NYC or Bermuda.

I can't recall seeing any marine life leaving NYC but the grand kids claim they saw dolphins when we left Bermuda. We've seen dolphins playing in the ships wake numerous times on the southern Carib.cruises, we also got a dolphin escort nearing Belize, and we had some whale sightings off of samana. All gems to treasure but more often than not the only thing we can really count on is seeing schools of flying fish.

I see you're on the Star... I'd head to the beir garden at sail away, get your bucket of beer and sit facing the stern and enjoy sailing out of NYC. Everyone is so busy looking forward they miss one of the best views by not looking back. You'll still see all the things usually mentioned but you,ll also get an awesome view as you pass the tip of manhattan with the hudson on your left, the east river to your right with the brooklynn bridge visible. If your lucky the staten island ferry will be in view as well. You'll have plenty of time to see the bridge approach and so just sit back and enjoy the sights.. Hope the weather is good, but even an over cast day offered up one of my favorite NYC sail always when I finally turned around and realized what I missed on those earlier cruises.

Yes we will be on the Star leaving on Sept. 30th! Thank you for the info everyone, I never would have thought to look for dolphin off NYC how great! We just came back from doing a whale watch out of Provincetown on the Cape and really enjoyed that. I can't wait to sit on the deck of the Star and watch beautiful Lady Liberty go by!

If you ever get a chance to go to Va. Beach, do it.....dolphins aplenty right offshore....there are entire families....and they frolic AT LEAST 2 times daily...sometimes, more, depending on what food-fishes are schooling offshore. If you can rent a sailboat, it's quite likely they will swim right beside you there. It's just a perfect spot for these mammals.

It's quite rare to see them in deep water...and trying to spot them (if they are around) in the open ocean is almost impossible.

Not a marine animal, but early in the morning when the ship returns to port in NY, look up underneath the bridge and towards the shore for a peregrine falcon or two. The falcon population in the city is growing and they can sometimes be seen hunting very early in the day. Here's an article on last year's new arrivals: http://www.silive.com/news/index.ssf/2011/06/high_atop_verrazano-narrows_br.html

We had one of those falcons, I named him IGOR on our GEM cruise last year.NYC to BDA. I wrote a review back then. It was quite the funny story. We had a mini suite on deck 11. I had gone back to take a relaxing bath while DH walked a deck enjoying his cigar. When I got out of the shower I heard a noise out on the balcony and thought it was him trying to spook me, I went and turned on the balcony light and there was IGOR sitting on our balcony table. I'll attach a photo or two. When DH came in our room and saw me sitting on the couch talking to someone/something out there he thought I had lost it, finally. WHen he walked over he couldn't believe what he saw. IGOR was pretty. Gone by morning. Made me think twice about leaving balcony doors open now.

I was not about to open the balcony door for better pictures :) You can see in the 2nd photo that Igor was trying to find his way out and flew up above our balcony door where I caught a photo of his wings.. 3rd picture is of his wing span!

Over many years, we've found that we see many more dolphins in open water than we ever see around harbors. Both on our own boat and the cruise lines, near the bow in open water it's not unusual to have them around for 30-45 minutes at a time.
