ssb Posted August 9, 2012 #26 Share Posted August 9, 2012 It sucked this weekend  The highway to Galveston can be a very busy on a Saturday summer day especially with a lot of last days of summer vacations. Galveston is a major tourist destination!

carpeperdiem Posted August 9, 2012 #28 Share Posted August 9, 2012 All six were open And maybe you should have planned differently! Unfortunately, my "planning" is here and now -- and I have no option except to drive from IAH to Galveston on Sunday morn 8/26 -- approx 8am. Should I be looking into alternate routes (are there alternate routes to Galveston?) I'm gonna use the live traffic link that Kat posted this weekend and see what it looks like. Galveston Cruiser Posted August 9, 2012 #29 Share Posted August 9, 2012 Sunday morning will NOT be a problem. There will be few cars on any of the highways. 59 south from the airport to 45 south to Galveston is a breeze. Traffic builds up every afternoon when Baybrook Mall on 45S is open. It won't be open that early. No need to stress over the drive.

Galveston Cruiser Posted August 9, 2012 #31 Share Posted August 9, 2012 The reason I recommend Hwy 59S to 45S is 59 is newer, wider and has 8 lanes with minimal traffic. 45 from the north side is old, 6 lanes, narrow and lots of traffic all the time. Have a great cruise:)
jonbgd Posted August 9, 2012 #32 Share Posted August 9, 2012 All six were open And maybe you should have planned differently! How can I plan differently???. We decided to drive down to Galveston. I cant control how many others decide to drive to Galveston on a day that I choose too. Ive driven down there with no traffic this weekend wasnt one of them 59 had no traffic but once we got on 45 and especially around the 610 and 8 merges it was stopped. It took close to 2 hrs to get from Kingwood to the seawall. Usually its a little over an hour. To the OP you will be fine especially on a sunday morning and I agree with Galveston Cruiser ..... 59S is the fastest way from IAH to Galveston

If you leave at 8:00 am on a Sunday morning from Kingwood the only problem could be a wreck! If there is a big problem on cams!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1. If you like from Kingwood you can use beltway 8 to 225 to 146 to Galveston. Look at Host Kat cam link and go from there! 2. If you like use HW 3 3. If you like 59 to 288 to 6 to 45 to Galveston! To/From Galveston and IAH Bush for us the drive is about an hour! We certainly try to avoid high traffic times though! Like Galveston Cruiser said Don't stress over the time!!!! You have plenty of time from 8:00 am to make it!!!!! Patience is essential, attitude is everything. A good attitude is the difference between ordeal and adventure! Being happy does not mean that everything is perfect. It means you have decided to look beyond the imperfections of you’re expectations. Stevesan Posted August 10, 2012 #36 Share Posted August 10, 2012 Excellent highway map. I saved, printed and book marked it.:) Thank you. Eliminates all the nonessential roads and streets.
