MAHO BEACH & AIRPORT???

Recommended Posts

Hi Dan,

I've been glued to my computer to the site you sent me. Did you happen to catch the Aeropuerto de Lisboa, A321 TAP, 27/DEC/2002, attempted landing ,and then forced to take-off again? Pretty scary stuff, if I must say so myself. Wonder how the pilot, his crew, and those poor passengers were feeling Glad it wasn't an Air France flight. The crew used to be allowed to drink unlimited wine on board.

Best,

Bruce

I really don't have time to look at that site a lot unfortunately. Somewhere on there, however, they have a video of an A321 practicing a short field takeoff - the plane lifts off about 50 feet, gains speed, and then rockets up like you wouldn't believe. It's basically like in a normal 757 flight! :-P

This was a definite approach for landing, the aircraft never touched the tarmac, and pilot reved up his engines for take-off again.

Thanks for all your help today.

Good luck in school too.

Best,

Bruce

I, too, spend hours flying FS2004. I never fly anywhere in real life without flying the route myself on the computer. And once I get home I have to fly the route again. When I was a kid I'd go to the airport and spend hours watching planes come and go. Pretty hard to do that now so I just fly them myself on the computer.

Hehe - I do the same thing!

You can also catch a city bus (van) for $1-$2.00. We took one to Mullet Bay beach in the morning, then walked over to Maho Beach in the afternoon as there were more aircraft scheduled to land at that time. Bring good sunblock and or an umbrella as there is no shade. Also hang onto everything if you position yourself behind the runway. A couple of girls were lying on their blanket when a jet took off and paperback books, flip-flops, etc. were blown out into the water!

Hi 1corona4u,

Great shots. Love that surfboard.

Thanks,

Maho beach is awesome! We've been there three times, and our visit there tends to dictate our cruise itineraries, because we MUST stop in St. Martin!

Since the larger planes land in the afternoon, we sleep in and get a late brunch on the ship, and then head over by cab at around 11 AM. (Be aware that if there are a lot of ships in port it may take some time to get a cab). We hang at the Sunset Beach Bar and drink cheap drinks. Around 3:30 we ask them to call us a cab. For some reason [;-)] the cab ride back is much cheaper. Be aware that the bar only takes cash, so if you need more you can get a cash advance on a credit card (You will need a PASSPORT for ID) from the cage at the Caravan Sarai casino next door. (I did this while quite drunk, wearing a bikini and flip flops, and they were incredibly nice and accommodating!).

I alos love Maho! I have been there about 1/2 dozen times and each time it's better(though the first time I went, Sunset beach Bar was nothing but a little bar with a Bar-B-Que, it's grown!). We were just there 2 weeks ago, and the construction has definitely started...The new terminal building is all framed and they are back filling the water to create more land. I took more video that still photos, but the link below has some great shots!

Have a great time....

Oh, and I am also a huge FS2004 fan....Can't wait for the next version!

I'm going to Maho Beach June 8th because my cruise on the N.O.S. will be stoppng there. I have been told the airport construction won't even begin for another year or so. I hope that's still correct.

The construction has begun, the terminal is up, but not finished. Our driver said it all would be complete sometime in 2006. There is nothing started beyond the chain link fence though, like on the beach part. Funny though, he made no mention of them closing the beach because of it...

As long as the beach stays intact that's all that matters to me. I don't imagine them needing a runway expansion since they can land 747's there already. I doubt any airline will fly the monstrous A380 in there. And they don't get enough traffic to warrant a 2nd runway.

It would be cool to see an A380 land there though - if the beach was there, of course. :D

Man I hope I can go there next year!

Yeah, that's what I think too. I did not see a big plane take off, but the small ones took off to the east, not back out over the beach. I am getting ready to upload the rest of the pix from there, and will post the link as soon as I am done.:)

Thanks for your pic's. Enjoyed them. Can't wait to get there, runway expansion or not. BTW, I believe Fort Lauderdale International can accommodate 747's, although I don't see many, but you've peeked my interest when you spoke of an A380. Hope I have that right. How much bigger could it possible be than a 747, and still manage to get off the runway?

Best,

Bruce
Saw a Corsair 747 take off, and it too took off to the East....I think everything takes off to the east all the time....

From the way they have built the bar up, I'd imagine it is going to be there awhile.....
Actually departures are not ALWAYS to the east, as you see here:

How would you like to be on the beach and have this beast coming straight at you?
