Hi we have a day in Naples and want to do our own tour. We w thinking of going to Pompeii first, anyone help us with train or bus times and costs from the dock in Naples?

Then we were going to head to either sorrento or positano, by train as read you can leave Pompeii by an exit near train statio. Have also heard positano is prettier and less commercial?is this correct?

Then from either place get a boat back to the dock where our cruise ship will be in Naples.

We have to be back at the ship for half six and we dock in Naples at 7am

Thanks for any tips and advice from a New cruiser!

The Circumvesuviana train is the one you want for Pompei and Sorrento. The station is called Porta Nolana and is located on Corso Guiseppe Garibaldi, a mile and a quarter from Molo Angioino, the cruise port of Naples. Use these coordinates to make a google map of the Porta Nolana station: 40.848842,14.268875

You can walk to the station or take a bus or tram.

The web site for Circumvesuvia information and timetables is here: http://www.vesuviana.it/web/en

The fare from Naples to Pompei Scavi is Euro 2,80. The fare from Pompei Scavi to Sorrento is Euro 2,10.

The bus fare from the Sorrento Circumvesuviana station to Positano is Euro 1,50. The current bus schedule is here: http://www.sitasudtrasporti.it/public/tpl/campania/5070.pdf

You can download a map that shows you where the Pompei Circumvesuviana station is in relation to the ruins here: http://www.unicocampania.it/files/mappe/pompei.pdf

You can download a map of the ruins here: http://www.unicocampania.it/files/mappe/mappa_scavi.pdf

You have received some excellent suggestions and options from euro cruiser. BUT, I would like to offer some other options and potentials to consider. It sounds good to "do your own tour", but that is not always as time-efficient, simple and easy as might be needed to maximize your potentials in this great that has so super much to see and do. Doing it "on your own" means you skip and miss the Amalfi Coast.

Pompeii is wonderful, but can be busy. Positano is spectacular, along with many other options along the Amalfi Coast. Logistics is key in order to see and do more. We visited this wonderful for four days in 1999 during a land tour doing our own driving. It was great. Then last summer we came back and had a private tour with a small group through RomeInLimo. Let someone else be smart and wise in making the logistics smooth and orderly is wonderful. Below are some photo examples and added details to consider on Pompeii, etc.

Pompeii is super awesome. Why??? It is so unique and historic. It gives you a keen insight about how people lived and operated during that long-ago era. My most memorable moment was in walking into Pompeii and noticing certain grooves in the stone pavement. I asked our guide what caused those marking in the stone. Our guide replied: "That's from the chariots." WOW! It became very, very visual for where we were walking and what had happened here long, long ago.

Visiting the brothel house was also super interesting. Our guide pointed to the seven different visuals on the wall that provide "customers" a choice on what position they wished to choose. They needed to use visuals there as sailors from all of the world visited Pompeii and its port in that era. They didn't speak the local language. Our guide in 1999 said on one of the wall visuals that it was the "Monica Lewinsky position". He noted that people from all over the world touring this site knew what that phrase meant, nodding and smiling, regardless of their language spoken. Interesting little detail and moment!!!

Reactions and questions??

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Did a June 7-19, 2011, Solstice cruise from Barcelona that had stops in Villefranche, ports near Pisa and Rome, Naples, Kotor, Venice and Dubrovnik. Enjoyed great weather and a wonderful trip. Dozens of wonderful visuals with key highlights, tips, comments, etc., on these postings. We are now at 101,946 views for this live/blog re-cap on our first sailing with Celebrity and much on wonderful Barcelona. Check these postings and added info at:

An example of the art on the walls within a residence in Pompeii. Amazing sites and sights in this historic area.:

Amalfi is a key and historic town that gives its name to this famed and scenic coast surrounded by dramatic cliffs and spectacular scenery.. Between 839 and around 1200, the Duchy of Amalfi existed as major maritime and trading power. It rivaled Pisa and Genoa in domestic prosperity and maritime importance, before the later rise of Venice and Amalfi’s defeat by the Republic of Pisa. The Amalfi Coast is known for its production of limoncello liquor. Its lemons are grown in terraced gardens along the entire coast. In the 1920s and 1930s, Amalfi was a popular holiday destination for the British upper class and aristocracy. In 1997, the Amalfi Coast was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a cultural landscape. Below is a few of the town of Amalfi from its western side.:

Near Positano along the Amalfi Coast, this is the super luxury hotel, its gardens and views where the rooms go for about $1200 a night. Costly, but these are million-dollar sights from each of the rooms.:

Overlooking Positano along the Amalfi Coast, this is the view as we dined, family-style for lunch, at La Tagliata. The views here were super and the sun came out in strong force as we enjoyed our three-course lunch with local wine and drinks. Their website is http://www.latagliata.com.:

Romeinlimo does exactly what you are seeking. We did exactly that tour last week. We were picked up at 8AM at the pier in Naples and were the first group into Pompei at 8:30 when it opened. We had a hired guide within Pompei for 2 hours then back onto the 8 person van to drive to Positano. It was a Saturday and apparently St Mary's day thus the traffic on the highway was slow as the main church is S. Maria in a town getting to Positano. After about 1.5 hrs to see Positano back onto the van to drive to Sorrento where we all ate at a local restaurant a bit back from the tourist restaurants Il Leone Rosso with good and not overpriced lunches. We then had time to walk the town and then back on the van for the transport back to the ship. Our driver was Giovanni who negotiated the traffic well. He was not as talkative as other drivers/guides I have used and his English while far far better than my Italian did cause him to struggle some to find the right word.

You also might consider All Around Italy. We just returned from a Med Cruise aboard the NCL Epic. We used allarounditaly.com and had an amazing day on the Amalifi Coast then on to Pompeii. I have written a review under NCL board. We had the owner Fabrizio who was the best tour guide I have ever had. Just another suggestion.

OR..... save some $$$ and book with APTours. Same tours as the others, great drivers, easy to book with and at a much better price.

We have used them twice now and both times they were spectacular.

I just don't understand why Romeinlimo charges so much more for the same tour. Or better yet, why others pay so much more for the same tour ????

Here is an example: Pompeii and Amalfi coast

I agree with TLC in that it is a very interesting area of Italy with lots to see and do...... and so much more can be seen and done with a driver who knows the area and can take you right to the "front door".
